Congrats to @writersofrohan.bsky.social on this week’s publication of VIOLET THISTLEWAITE IS NOT A VILLAIN ANYMORE and this awesome write up in the NYTimes! www.nytimes.com/2025/11/20/b...
Screen shot from article:

We close with Krempholtz's charming romantasy, VIOLET THISTLEWAITE IS NOT A VILLAIN ANYMORE (Ace, 368 pp., paperback, $19). One of my favorite fantasy tropes is stories that explore the time after a heroic journey:
What do saviors do once the world has been saved? What does a villain's henchwoman do when the villain has finally fallen?

The cover for Violet Thistlewaite is Not a Villain Anymore by Emily Krempholtz which features an illustrated scene within a border of two figures standing outside of a plant shop. One has tan skin, short brown hair, stubble, and is wearing a trench coat and brown slacks. They have their arms crossed. The other has pale skin, long, curly brown hair, a pink shirt and apron, and holds their hands up with floral magic coming from their palms. A large dark purple dragon is above them and blows florals instead of fire. The tagline reads "Every thorn has its rose."

You grate fresh nutmeg into a pot of applesauce and ladle some into a small, delicate dish to set on your back step. In the morning, in its place, is a small bundle of black feathers tipped with violet, and a rough-made pot of acorn ink.

You spend the morning collecting the last apples from the wild orchard, planning a feast of pies and butters and preserves. You always put a small, honey-sweet pie at the base of the oldest tree, and while you’ve never seen who takes it, afterward you’ll find odd coins in the bark all winter long.

My cartoon for this week’s @theguardian.com Books
Title: How to focus on writing your book

There follow eleven tiny images telling a story. The captions read:

Turn your devices off (a writer with a phone and laptop. The screens are dark).
Put them in a drawer.
Lock the drawer.
Throw away the key.
Leave the house.
Do not look back.
Keep to backroads and hedgerows.
Feel your old life slip away. (the writer has shed his clothes)
Sleep by day.
Forage in the evening.
Write by the light of the moon
When you have a passable first draft, commit a minor crime and use your phone call to contact your agent. (the naked writer is in a prison holding a phone while an unamused police officer looks on).

This bill is absolutely insane, and basically begs for the necessity of librarian bouncers, keepin teens away from forbidden sections of the library It's absurd on its face, misleading, and will ultimately be needlessly expensive-- a similar bill in ID led almost immediately to litigation.

While you're distracted by a SCOTUS case about inclusive books in schools, the new leader at the IMLS is demanding that state librarians share what their grant money is being used for. I told you this would happen, and here it is.
Email sent from IMLS to state librarians reads: "Pursuant to 20 USC § 9134 and your obligations under the Grant Award Guidance and Statement of Assurances and Certifications, please provide IMLS with the following information:

Whether and how federal taxpayer dollars provided to you under the Grants to States program have been used, or are still being used, to subsidize programs that conflict with government policy as found below:
Executive Order 14151, Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing, and
Executive Order 14253, Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History, and
Executive Orders 13899 and 14188, Combating Anti-Semitism and Additional Measures To Combat Anti-Semitism, and
Executive Order 14168, Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government, and
Executive Order 14202, Eradicating Anti-Christian Bias, and
Executive Order 14190, Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling, and
How federal taxpayer dollars provided to you under the Grants to States program are being used to facilitate access to resources that cultivate an educated and informed American citizenry, and
How you plan to involve your agencies in the upcoming celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States of America?

Kindly provide this information by Monday, May 5, 2025 to stateprograms@imls.gov with the subject line “Response to IMLS Request for Information.”
