Moeten we bepaalde aanbevelingsalgoritmen maar gaan verbieden om inmenging op sociale media tegen te gaan? Het Kabinet schrijft in het coalitieakkoord anti-democratische en polariserende algoritmen te willen verbieden. Morgen debateert de Tweede Kamer over sociale media & inmenging.

Het valt me op dat in discussies over digitale tech de daadwerkelijke werking op een gekke manier wordt gescheiden van "hoe het technisch werkt". Zie deze discussie over LLM'S die lokale partijen totaal negeren in stemadvies. Slechte trainingsdata. Of: het ligt aan de devs.

"Inmenging in publiek debat rond verkiezingen is met social media eenvoudig". Dat stelt het Rathenau Instituut vandaag. Veel van wat je online ziet, komt van mensen die je niet volgt. Hoe komt dat? Platformen zijn steeds meer gaan leunen op aanbevelingsalgoritmen. En dat maakt kwetsbaar.

Op X is nu opeens te zien uit welk land accounts komen. Opeens blijken er wel érg veel Nederlandstalige accounts te opereren vanuit niet-Europese landen. Dit legt een fundamenteel probleem in ons huidige publieke debat bloot: we hebben amper inzicht in hoe inhoud online wordt verspreid en gepusht.
