A lot of people have asked me: why are the govt trying to undo the edu policies that have made England so successful? Latest Substack does not attempt to answer that question, because I don't know the answer! But it has some related comment. substack.nomoremarking.com/p/what-is-go...

The whataboutery around these results is quite something. I am sceptical that a lot of the people picking holes in the data methodology, to undermine England’s success, would be doing so had they shown us plummeting. This is a real public policy triumph, built by school reformers of *all* parties

Insights from A-levels: Maths has 115k entries & Eng Lit just 36k. 20 yrs ago they both had about 50k A generation of kids will be far more familiar with quadratics & conditional probability than Mr Rochester & Ophelia. Bayes is destroying Defoe... substack.nomoremarking.com/p/the-fall-o...

Could you predict which children will be Neets? No – and it’s unfair to ask that of teachers | Daisy Christodoulou
The idea of government adviser Alan Milburn sounds laudable. But it’s asking too much of a system already struggling to meet society’s demands, says education writer Daisy Christodoulou

It’s just depressing. Further education has been cut to ribbons. Higher education is in crisis. Labour turns its eyes to the bit of the education system which is turning out the highest literacy rates in the western world and goes “that’s the bit that needs to change”

The UK economy has problems. There's been barely any per capita GDP growth or real income growth in about 20 years. Policymakers would be better off finding solutions for this than getting primary schools to make lists of children at risk of unemployment. substack.nomoremarking.com/p/schools-ar...

Folks: these days the England system has BTECs, T-Levels, degree apprenticeships, a whole load of other apprenticeship assessments, and very flexible HE entry across a broad range of providers, including foundation years for those without L3. We already *have* a lot of pathways!

No Andy, education doesn't need a 'complete rethink'

When university, or buying a house, are so expensive for young people, it’s no surprise that going to uni becomes more of a transaction - STEM a means to a stable job. But English literature falling in popularity will leave us with dreary, diminished culture. www.theguardian.com/education/20...

Superb article by CAPE. Particularly love the emphasis placed on the importance of respecting the “unique contributions of each discipline…grounded in subject-specific knowledge”.
