I hope New Yorkers will challenge Mamdani about this. Too often, people feel they need to be absolutely for or against a politician — ignoring their missteps or throwing them out with the bathwater. You can like and/or believe in someone and still challenge them to deliver on their promises.

But to defend books coverage in these craven terms is already to concede too much. Popularity is not always a measure of merit, and, in any case, it is not static. What people click—and what they think they like—is largely a matter of what is available to them. Publics are made and maintained, not discovered preformed, like rock formations. It is a sign of a fatally limited imagination to assume that we can only ever desire the pittance to which we are currently reconciled. It is par for the course that, in a woefully limp statement on the carnage, the Post’s executive editor, Matt Murray, referred to the paper’s subscribers not as “readers” but as “consumers.” A consumer is a person whose preëxisting tastes you strive to satisfy over and over; a reader is someone you hope to change, convince, and surprise.

We have a new episode out today! This week @bibliopaul.bsky.social and I talk about Books We Wish We Could Read for the First Time Again! We thought it would be an easy subject, what is magical about that sense of discovery? open.substack.com/pub/mookse/p...

Episode 124: Books We Wish We Could Read for the First Time Again
We’ve all said it: “I wish I could read that again for the first time.” But what do we really mean when we say it?

This is a BEASTLY object. I feel so fortunate to live in a time where, 100 years after its debut, a bold, brave work of language-pushing experimentation can find a new audience. As always, thank you @dalkeyarchive.bsky.social

I'm delighted to announce that we've now sold over 100 sets of the new US edition of Dorothy Richardson's Pilgrimage. And I hope it's a special sign that the 100th set was purchased by none other than the superb writer Carmen Maria Machado. Reading Pilgrimage 2026 starts in 19 days!

If I can convince 14 more people to pre-order Gertrude Stein's Making of Americans before 12/16, it will bring us to 501 copies, surpassing the entire first print run of the book from 1925. I feel like we can correct a wrong, at least symbolically, or like, cosmically.

To those who are going to read Schattenfroh when it's published in a month. I encourage you to use my visual guide, but it is not a good idea to go through it before you start reading the book. Consult it as you make progress through the novel. theuntranslated.wordpress.com/2025/06/19/a...

A couple of weeks ago I finished my first ever read-through of Miss MacIntosh, My Darling. It cemented itself as an all-time favourite that will linger in my mind for years to come. I can’t wait for its dualities and dreamscapes to pull me back in the future. THANK YOU @dalkeyarchive.bsky.social

Got some gems! These four authors are particularly high on my priority list. #literature #bookish #bookhaul #translatedliterature

I’m reaching the end of my days as a multi-book reader. No longer can I read 3 or more complex works in parallel. But these Latin American masterworks have served as the best peripheral companions in 2025. (“Peripheral” is used loosely here. These each demand immense attention and reverence)

I was officially influenced by @wastemailinglist.bsky.social I’ve read slivers of “The 120 Days of Sodom” out of a curiosity that I imagine many readers flirt with. But it really wasn’t doing much for me outside of the shock factor. However, Seth made a great case for this collection!

Treated myself to a copy of Les Misérables today, only to accidentally discover that I’ve been building a collection of @penguinbooksusa.bsky.social Classic Deluxe novels! Love these editions. The art, deckled edging and French flaps raise the bar for me.

“My mother had always wanted to die while travelling-as then she would never completely die-for every traveller dies merely by passing through a city, and none will know that landscape which he passes through in the long night. Death is that which is caused by our partial knowledge”

Failure to launch as far as posting consistently here… Nevertheless, I feel compelled to share my current read: the sumptuous, spiraling “Miss Macintosh, My Darling”. I won’t jump to any solid conclusions for another 1000 pages, but it’s so, so special. Thank you @dalkeyarchive.bsky.social

I recently finished #TheEmpusium, my second #Tokarczuk novel. Her biting prose and distinct, oddball protagonists cement her as an all-time favourite already. But now my Tokarczukian pursuits have lead me to The Hearing Trumpet by Leonora Carrington (#NYRB) Share your thoughts if you’ve read it!
