Having been a qualifier judge for a few years, I thought I’d enter #Tableau #IronViz this year! High Times, High Companions, and High Spirits is my (very high level) story about the changing tastes of cocktails. I leant into my strengths and drew everything with map layers too! #DataViz

Takeaways this time: - there were a lot more drives all round this week. Not sure whether last week was first week nerves? - Giants @ Dallas, wow. Obviously. - the Lions didn't just put the Bears to the sword, they also used a lot of plays to do it. - Browns @ Ravens was a real game of two halves.

Week 2 #NFL drive chart #DataViz! Did a few visual tweaks and had to deal with random things like whatever the heck the Steelers did with that Seattle kick-off. If anyone has any tips on designing headers and borders then please let me know. I'm terrible at that bit! #DataFam #SportsAnalytics

Go Titans! (I don’t have a team myself but I did see them against the Ravens in London a couple of years ago). I’m hoping Cam Ward can bring a bit of pizzazz back for you after your recent slide!

Couple of things that stood out to me: - Titans @ Broncos looks really broken up - Dolphins @ Colts by contrast is really simple (makes sense with Dan Jones’ record setting feats) - Didn’t realise the Bills had missed so many 2pt attempts! Makes it feel less close somehow

Thought I'd try something very different tonight so here is my first experiment with QGIS - a neon outline of the Isle of Man and its famous TT course. I'm very pleased with how it turned out as a first quick go. #DataFam #Tableau #Maps #SportsVizSunday

It’s always surprising how different a team can be in preseason compared to the regular season. So many things kept under hats for the competitive games I suppose

Mo Wootten @woomo.bsky.social · 26/02/2025
So cool! If a team has high xG but low goals, is that more likely to be from saves/blocks or missing the goal entirely? I’m thinking about the size of hockey goals compared to football goals, but I haven’t watched very much hockey to know

This is a cool way to see whether a team won through overwhelming firepower, clinical finishing, being the least worst, or some combination of the above! #DataViz

New favourite chart
Bar chart showing the number of days since teams lost a Premier League home game by two or more goals. Most teams are on less than 100 days (for Man City it's been less than 24 hours, lol). Excluding games played during lockdown, Liverpool have gone 3,467 days since losing by more than one goal at Anfield. Including games played with no fans, it has been 1,465 days for Liverpool, more than four times as long as their nearest rivals (Arsenal on 316 days).

Thanks Rudy! Yeah me too. I assume that they didn’t have much confidence in the run against the eagles massive D line but it made it easier for the eagles to defend knowing it was likely to come through the air. That was the moment I thought it was over too - they had Mahomes’ number!

Super Bowl LIX matchups While both teams had impressive records and tore through the playoffs, not all units were elite. The Philadelphia Eagles have the advantage in three phases of the game.

Something that does need fixing is the colour pairings, as some are too similar for the same fixture. I'm working on creating some better ones but haven't got there yet. Single Game Dashboard: public.tableau.com/app/profile/... Season Review Dashboard: public.tableau.com/app/profile/...

Finally got my #NFL #DataViz dashboards up! The first does single games like my original post below, and the second one does these whole season reviews which incorporate the single games too. And I added a little bit of drive info too. Just in time for the #SuperBowl #DataFam! Links below 👇

I had a go at making some #NFL drive charts! I'm really pleased with how they turned out. I wanted to go with something that felt a bit more minimal (I am forever inspired by @barelymaps.bsky.social) and believe it or not, this was the more minimal version... #SportsAnalytics #DataViz #DataFam

Dataviz people, what say you? Do dashboards usually fail?
121
Mo Wootten @woomo.bsky.social · 05/01/2025
I see this too but the missing part is often that the customer didn’t really want a dashboard - they wanted an answer. The vast majority of dashboards I build are for me to answer business questions sustainably, which I would argue is still a successful dashboard.

Mo Wootten @woomo.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
I’m not sure how long that might take though, or what the milestones for it are. It raises all sorts of other questions for me too like where does this fit with art & graphic design? And, given that people have been using images to convey meaning for millennia, how new can this really be? 3/3

Mo Wootten @woomo.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
There are a growing number of #dataviz specific roles - and a growing number of specialist designers too - but it think it is still generally seen as a skill set that either people who work with data have/need, or a part of work that graphic designers/artists do. 2/3

Mo Wootten @woomo.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
Great question, and I’ve been pondering it overnight. I’m not entirely satisfied with this but for now I’d venture “when it is seen a discipline and not a skill set”. In the same way that graphic design is separate to painting, even though the same person might use similar principles in both. 1/3

This has been on my mind, is this true? 🤔 Yeah, I feel uncomfortable criticising others work because I often lack knowledge of the context and I know I feel 'attacked' myself the other way around (+still insecure on my skills). I would rather like for us to take a more positive stand 1/6 #dataviz

Some interesting comments & quotes in this post. Personally I see quite a lot of innovation, and people pushing the boundaries of things, but I’m in a relatively small corner. On the criticism, I think this is a side-effect of #dataviz being both inherently creative and a relatively new field.

I think it depends on the balance between precision and interpretation/appeal. For me, the Super Bowl icon is recognisable and draws the reader in, and makes a distinction between the Super Bowl & the first meeting, whereas seeing the precision of the score difference is less important.
