I observed an occultation of binary star Antares by the moon. The smaller star of the pair reappeared on the moon's dark limb a few seconds before the brighter star. #astronomy #occultation #moon

My friend Martin Ratcliffe recently shared his photo montage of the 2023 annular solar eclipse over Bryce Canyon, Utah. I may be biased, but I think it's spectacular (and it got selected for an astronomy picture of the day). 🧪🔭 apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap23101...
This timelapse series captured on October 14 is set against the sunrise view from Sunset Point, Bryce Canyon, planet Earth. Of course on that date the New Moon caught up with the Sun in the canyon's morning skies. Local temperatures fell as the Moon's shadow swept across the high altitude scene and the brilliant morning sunlight became a more subdued yellow hue cast over the reddish rocky landscape. In the timelapse series, images were taken at 2 minute intervals. The camera and solar filter were fixed to a tripod to follow the phases of the annular solar eclipse.

On Sunday night, at a club observing session with the 30-inch telescope, I took this 30 second exposure of the scene and accidentally caught #comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) in the background. The bright object on the right is the crescent moon. #Astronomy

A long ago collision of two galaxies stirred up this far off star system called the Black Eye Galaxy (M64) and resulted in all this dark galactic dust obscuring the active starburst core. I photographed this using a 16 inch vintage telescope and modern ccd camera #astrophotography #space #galaxies

Comet C/2024 G3 ATLAS photographed about one hour after sunset tonight from West Beach, located near Adelaide in South Australia. Despite the twilight conditions, many passersby were able to see the comet with just their eyes. Exposure: 1x10sec Equipment: skymaps.com/ir0/ Credit: Kym Thalassoudis
The image shows a comet with a long arching tail set against a colourful twilight sky featuring red, orange, pale blue and dark blue colours.

Messier 83 (Southern Pinwheel) is a spectacular face-on spiral galaxy in the constellation Hydra at a distance of 14.7 million light years. The galaxy is quite bright, so the image appears instantly when my telescope lands on it. Using a monochrome camera helps. #M83 #Astronomy #Astrophotography

space fireworks to celebrate the new year 🎆
Taking up the central area of the image is the colorful supernova remnant DEM L 190, which is made of intricate tendrils of cosmic material glowing in shades of purple, yellow, orange, and blue. The edges of the image are black and scattered with red and purple-ish stars.Thousands of bright stars shine against black space, more tightly condensed near the image’s center. The stars glint in shades of white, blue, and red, and diffraction spikes are visible around the foreground stars. The giant nebula NGC 3603 is a prominent star-forming region in the Carina spiral arm of our galaxy, about 20,000 light-years away. Within its core is nestled a stellar "jewel box" of thousands of sparkling young stars, one of the most massive young star clusters in the Milky Way Galaxy.

The cluster is surrounded by purple clouds of interstellar gas and dust — the raw material for new star formation. This bubble provides an unobstructed view of the cluster and reveals stages in the life cycle of stars.A prominent, eight-pointed star shines in bright white at the center of this image. A clumpy cloud of material surrounds this central star, with more material above and below than on the sides, in some places allowing background stars to peek through. The cloud material is a dark yellow closer to the star, and turns a pinkish purple at its outer edges. Combined together, the central star and its cloud resemble the delicate petals of a cherry blossom. The black background features many smaller white stars scattered throughout.

47 Tucanae is the best globular cluster in the sky (and M13 isn't even second best!) It's a dense, spherical collection of ancient stars about 14,000 light years distant - pretty close for a glob. This image is from Dec 26 - a stack of 45 x 4 sec exposures. #Astronomy #Astrophotography
