How did a pioneering woman doctor choose her work wear? In 1863 Elizabeth Garrett, training at a dispensary in Spitalfields, wrote @the work dress she’d chosen. ‘A delightful gown of pre-Raphaelite brown. The colour resembles that in Millais “Trust Me”.’That pic had been shown @ the RA in 1862.

‘The British Women’s Suffrage Movement in 100 Objects’ is out in the world
My new book has been garnering some interest out in the real world. I was invited to talk about the book - and other things - on the Standard Issue Podcast. My interviewer, Hannah Dunleavy, had taken the trouble to study the book and select from it a few 'suffrage objects' for further discussion. And so, among other things, we talked about taking suffrage to Orkney in the early 1870s (Object 4) and Object 56 - May Billinghurst's 'Velociman', the invalid' tricycle that allowed her freedom to break the law c 1913.

This is extraordinarily bad, as even the UK copyright libraries (e.g. Cambridge) have moved over to frequently only acquiring the ebook version of new publications. If you don't own the hard copy, you're just renting and you are at the mercy of the publisher.

Yes, today’s ’suffrage objects’ are a few of the games that owe their existence to the suffrage movement. Some created by the activists, some by commercial manufacturers, perhaps the bonhomie generated did convert some ‘anti’s to the Cause #womenshistory #suffragettes #suffrageobject #votesforwomen
