Dandy Fest has been moved to Spats and it’s just around the corner! Bobby has worked so hard and continues to work his ass off and this celebration is so well deserved. The line-up for all 3 shows is insane! We can’t wait to see new and old faces!!! Let’s have a good time! <3

I grew up in Oakland’s Montclair neighborhood, which borders Piedmont. My family later moved to Adams Point, which borders Piedmont on the other side. I’ve been around Piedmont a lot. Some thoughts, in no particular order:

Pls send me your two lines recommendations! I can endorse the Japanese story collection from their Calico series, Unusual Fragments, featuring a number of undersung 20th Century queer writers. Also Elvira Navarro: A Working Woman haunted me, and I've heard good things about the new one.

It’s always a gift when a vulnerable person lets a reporter into the toughest parts of their lives. Sitting in on this meeting with a woman suffering so many indignities was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
As soon as they sit down, Alejo can tell that potential ejection from Medi-Cal isn't Flores' most urgent issue. She needs mental health treatment, and soon. She can stop crying only for a couple of minutes at a time. Her daughter, who lives thousands of miles away, is seriously ill with kidney disease. Her husband died last year, leaving her bereft and with a new level of financial instability.
Flores, who grew up in El Salvador, is a legal US resident with temporary protected status
-which shields her from deportation because of instability in her home country-but that designation expires in September, and the Trump administration is working to end TPS for citizens of several other countries. "My heart and my soul are tired, very tired," she says in Spanish, before unspooling an extended, enigmatic analogy about how God causes roses to bloom.
Alejo listens carefully, occasionally offering a tissue or murmuring consolations. She doesn't interrupt or try to fast-forward to practical steps, even when Flores' train of thought becomes difficult to follow. For now she's focused on earning trust.

New feature from your pal Megan! I embedded with a community health worker in Fresno, California to tell the story of why CHWs are so valuable to the health care system — and why they're under threat. I'm real proud of this one, would be thrilled if you read it. (gift link!)

The most "new" thing happening in mainstream grid policy discourse is about giving AI companies major stakes in the financing and ownership of grid transmission assets. That doesn't just miss the forest for the trees, it describes a different forest altogether.

The way it works is: Readers pay a nominal subscription fee, which is then split among the publications they read based on the time they spend reading each one. Pubs pay nothing to be included, it's purely extra revenue. A genuinely cool thing to have in the world imo!

She selects Martha Coolidge's debut Not a Pretty Picture (1976), a formally inventive film which forms a sort of teen trilogy with Valley Girl (1983) and Real Genius (1985); thematically, they are journeys to principle and outlook.
