All of your anger at Mattingly should be directed at Dombrowski for not giving him the personnel that could pitch the middle innings

Consider how this season would have gone had Zack Wheeler not gotten back to his Ace-level self.

Remember: as this team loses a game in which they decided that having a bullpen game was the best route to a badly needed victory, they knowingly and willingly decided to play a pitcher down by not putting an injured Jonathan Bowlan on the injured list. That’s egregious

And it’s not just a major league change that needs to occur. Serious developmental change needs to happen at the minor league level as well. It’s a tough needle to thread, so the real question is: does Middleton have the stones to give the reins to someone else?

Ethan Witte @witteethan.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
The roster mess is of course of Dombrowksi’s creation, but the onus will be on Middleton to see that something must change. If not, if he thinks that a mere managerial change is enough, then these next few years is going to be quite rough.

The most important person of the Phillies right now is Middleton. Does he recognize that change needs to happen, or does he simply keep throwing blind trust in Dombrowski?

As badly as this roster needs a change, there may not be enough time to fix it.

Ethan Witte @witteethan.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
The worst part that is looming about the Phillies is that with the lockout, they’ll have effectively a month to figure out how to fix the roster. Once the lockout ends, they’ll probably start spring training right away and no one will be making moves during that time period

My conspiracy theory: Dodgers tanked the Padres series because they want the Phillies out of the playoffs. The Dodgers are scared of the Phillies

Brandon Marsh probably shouldn’t be in the lineup any longer, regardless of who is on the mound

Kerkering shouldn’t be on the postseason or 2027 Phillies roster

I could be mistaken, but I think the Phillies are bad at baserunning

The only thing I can think of watching Wheeler pitch like this is endgame Roy Halladay.

One thing that is going to annoy me is how expensive Renteria’s Bowman first auto cards are going to be

Ethan Witte @witteethan.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
I’m probably wrong about all of this, but I just don’t think it’s the catastrophic calamity some are making it out to be.

Ethan Witte @witteethan.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
The bullpen is better, depending on if you believe Painter is actually mostly fixed, maybe the rotation will be fine. (7/)

Ethan Witte @witteethan.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Should they have done something different? Sure. Taylor Ward might have been better for the defensive fit, but he hasn’t really hit for power this year. We sure that’s gonna just flip on were he to arrive here? Arraez is like a metronome with his ability (6/)
100
Ethan Witte @witteethan.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
In the lineup, Arraez over Rincones/BDLC is a win. Maybe the latter duo could get hot for a bit, but how often do we complain this lineup strikes out too much? (5/)

Harper to RF: this might be the worst one, but again, Crawford/Hill should be able to take some of the CF/RF gap and cover that. Plus, Harper’s speed might better be utilized in RF than 1B. If anything, I'd be more worried about the injury risk he is taking on (4/)

Ethan Witte @witteethan.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Stott to 3B: even as rough as it could be, Bohm was no great shakes. I'll take Stott’s athleticism and ability to move side to side and think he can at least be what Bohm was (3/)

Ethan Witte @witteethan.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
In regards to the defense: Bohm to 1B: if Harper has been so bad statistically, how much more worse can it really get? He should be able to at least equate what Harper is now (2/)

Sent this over on the other site, so here goes. I’m probably the contrarian on all of this, but I believe the Phillies are fine with what they did at the deadline. (1/)

In Trading Ramon Marquez for Luis Arraez Prior Process Failures Increase Cost to Stay Afloat
In the winter of 2018-2019 the Phillies traded for top prospect J.P. Crawford along with the ill advised recently signed Carlos Santana to the Mariners for Jean Segura, Juan Nicasio, and James Pazos. Ultimately, Segura would be completely solid for the Phillies and Crawford would be mostly that for the Mariners. The surrounding parts of the deal had involved a draft pick to sign Santana, having Rhys Hoskins play the outfield, and mismanaging the Crawford/Scott Kingery situation so much that the Phillies got nothing from two top prospects.

For those that wish the Phillies to enter a rebuild, let me remind you, rebuilds are not as fun as you think they are.

Ethan Witte @witteethan.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Anyway, trade Orion. He’s cooked here without a third pitch when the other two aren’t that good

Again I ask: where is the offense in games? One hit after the Realmuto home run. One!

Ethan Witte @witteethan.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
I’m not saying he’s not bad at this, that he shouldn’t be fired after the game tonight. But Kerkering made some bad pitches. Thats on him
000
Ethan Witte @witteethan.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Listen, he’s not good, at all, at managing a bullpen. But some of this has to fall on the pitchers for being bad at execution of pitches

Ethan Witte @witteethan.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
But yeah, Donnie, keep telling us how Bryce shouldn’t say that this team needs help.

We can place a lot of the blame on Mattingly for his pitching moves….bur where is the offense to pile on runs?
030
Ethan Witte @witteethan.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
I’ll disagree to a point in that Mattingly hasn’t had a fifth starter in like two months and a Nola that can barely get through five. What else is he supposed to do?
080
Ethan Witte @witteethan.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
They won’t sell, nor should they. They’re still in a WC spot and should continue to push for that. After the season? Depending on how it all finishes, that’s a whole other story
