A negative externality is a shifting of costs. As the cost of a transactional communication shrinks to zero for a business they are incentivized to massively scale their funnel and so massively increase the time wasted by 99% of the recipients of a message. We only have 24 hours in a day.

I will say, everyone I know in this space is wrestling with their AI position. Part of the problem is…well complicated. But boils down to, a lot of labor unions have become enmeshed in owners’ priorities because profit benefits dues paying members. AI is a bright line between workers and owners.

One of the things that is going to change is that we’re never ever again going to be able to be dominated by public officials who tell us, ‘Trust the experts,’” Mr. Kennedy said during the Tuesday session.

“If somebody tells you, ‘Masks work, trust the experts,’ A.I. may tell you otherwise,” he added. “If somebody tells you, ‘Social distancing works, trust the experts,’ A.I. may correct that. And if somebody tells you that a vaccine will prevent transmission and infection, or you need to take it to protect your grandmother, A.I. may say it actually doesn’t do that.”

I think the "debate" about bringing iced coffee to job interviews is effective at distracting people from the really bad job market, the high unemployment rate for Black women, ongoing mass layoffs in tech and media, and how Gen Z workers are refusing to adopt many toxic aspects of corp work culture

A lot of universities will be facing big deficits and looking to cure what ails them. I just want them to be thoughtful about it.
Screenshot of article which reads: At the same time, new job-focused majors may not be sustainable — and can even backfire. Dominique Baker, an associate professor of education and public policy at the University of Delaware, pointed to the rise in computer-science degrees in the 2010s. At the time, they seemed like the best way to secure a high-paying salary after graduation, she said. But with the rise of generative artificial intelligence, computer-science jobs are increasingly hard to find, and enrollment in such programs is falling significantly.
“When you tie the viability, the financial viability in particular, of an institution really tightly to jobs creation on that scale,” especially as a four-year institution, she said, “you have to be really careful, because you can find that in 10 years that program that you poured all your money into — worthless.”

This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects. Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it. apnews.com/article/open...

I am teaching myself to embroider so I can put "email is an asynchronous medium" on a hat and/or tshirt to wear to work because, as well as hating scheduled send, I also hate the virtue signalling subject lines that say "I might be emailing outside of [my] business hours but you don't have to!"

Beck Wise @wisebeck.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
If you sent it at that actual time it would arrive in business hours here (I hate scheduled send, email is an asynchronous medium, timezones exist, people work different hours even within a timezone, they make their own choices about notifications and work emails on personal phones!)

My line from the beginning has been that I can think of lots of "secure assessment" that isn't actively harmful but not that I can do in 10 75-minute tutorials a semester AND cover the class content. More class time is not cheap but valuable things shouldn't be cheap

What's most upsetting me as a journal editor is that many papers we receive where AI use is disclosed for editing and language refinement actually appear to have been ruined rather than improved by AI. We get what seem like promising underpinning studies, but totally obscured by over-complex text.

Be sure to read this piece in @nytopinion.nytimes.com by Jessica Grose. There's a straight line between what she's talking about here--college-as-trade-school-- and the options for how we deal with AI in the classroom. If everything is output and product, then the outsourcing of writing /1
Who knows how many kids we have already trapped in a cutthroat competition to get a small number of finance or tech jobs, when their brains might have been put to better use creating the next great piece of literature, designing a new kind of green building, or working in a lab that could lead to the next medical breakthrough? When we impugn the more esoteric ambitions of higher education, we lose the ability to dream big about what our young people can accomplish.

This shift to computerized state tests was made possible by schools' adoption of one-to-one devices. Which mostly happened with Covid. And yet, we rarely discuss the possibility that computerizing tests--without first teaching computing skills--might've contributed to subsequent test score declines.

My boiling hot take on this is that, if tech companies are going to fund this kind of research (looking at Schmidt too), then the money needs to be given *no strings* to an independent arm's length research body, pooled with other funding, and treated as a donation not as direct funding.
