did everyone else know there is an incredible brutalist cathedral about an hour outside the twin cities? my partner and i went yesterday and holy shit it was amazing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_J...
a vast wall of honeycomb concrete shapes filled with patchwork stained glassan even wider views of the stained glass windows with a balcony cutout in the middlea shot of the front of the cathedral taken from floor level, showing massive brutalist shapes stretching across the church a view from under the balcony, showing its large cantilevered supports made of poured concrete

apropos of nothing, when my partner and I met we found out within a couple days that we shared a favorite band: Frightened Rabbit. we had each seen them live about 6 times before meeting. but never will see them together, RIP Scott Hutchison. we built a shrine to them in our house.
a gig poster of the band, and art that we made representing some common motif's from their album artwork. a drumstick my partner got at a show, and the two books of Scott's lyrics and arts. all of this is in our dining room.

a beige couch which red blocks at the front of the the center cushions strikingly similar to a labia. on the back cushions are two shapes that uh, don't take much imagination to be read as tits with yellow nipples. the couch is labeled as "abstract"

sneak peak of the upbeat and lighthearted blog post i'm working on
This scale of compute requires more energy than we have available. A lot more. Data centers are expected to use 21GW of power in 2026, and that is [expected to quadruple by 2030](https://newsletter.semianalysis.com/p/us-grid-constraints-towards-40gw), under current plans. According to the analysis I just linked, that exceeds the excess capacity of the US power grid, including what is being built to add new power in that period.

But have no fear, the AI companies aren't going to let a little problem like "we need to consume more power than the grid can produce" slow them down. Data center companies are rapidly copying [Elon Musk's Memphis strategy](https://wpln.org/post/elon-musks-xai-pollution-and-data-centers-what-you-need-to-know-about-a-tennessee-bill/), building out "behind-the-meter" power generation using methane gas turbines. You may have seen a [New Jersey data center](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/aug/27/new-jersey-vineland-datacenter-permits) coming under fire for this recently. Behind the meter means the power generation happens on site, it's not coming over the grid from a publicly regulated power plant or supply.

Two things to know about methane: one it's been branded as natural gas because that sounds a lot less dangerous, and two it's a greenhouse gas that's about [80x more powerful than Co2 on a 20 year horizon](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1462901122001204) . Actually, three: it's also a terrible pollutant for all living beings in its vicinity.

i write poetry—mostly to play with words and think, and thus for myself—but i just found this in a notebook and i dunno, it resonates. text in alt.
i am not yet to cynical for this world
the majesty of a tree—any tree, not
just the fancy ones—still overpowers
me, challenges me, confounds me as I contemplate
what it would be like to never leave
a spot, to not be able to move out of the way
to need the earth where i am, where i can
reach, to need that earth to sustain me.
To need the water to be toxin free, the soil
to be healthy, to need the climate to be stable
because if these needs aren't met, well,
what can I do?

It looks like I will finish this shawl in the next week! i made up the pattern as i went; I wanted to make a river shape. I love it so much, it's my first time not following a pattern and I'm excited to explore more. Made it for my partner; it's like a blanket lol.

Since the savings of universal healthcare is in the news, I have a portion in this post about why rich people like the current system, and it's a map for the incentives we're working against. www.winstonhearn.com/wrote/2026/s...
The current US healthcare system benefits the finance industry in 3 ways. First, it creates massive middle-man companies (insurers) who can siphon money off every aspect of the healthcare industry without needing to add any value. These companies are some of the most valuable in the world. Second, the necessity of healthcare and the absence of universal healthcare generates medical debt, and debt is one of the financial industry’s favorite tools. Third, the linking of healthcare to employment creates extremely strong incentives for staying employed; it reduces the agency of millions of people who might do other things with their time and labor, but instead hold down jobs to maintain health insurance. These three benefits to the finance industry become incentives to preserve the status quo; to refuse changes that would benefit millions of people. This also explains why biggest change to the US healthcare system in recent memory has not been to expand healthcare access via state coverage (universal healthcare like other countries have) but rather to subsidize the current industry (via the ACA). The country made the current healthcare system more sustainable by artificially reducing the cost of private insurance, ensuring all 3 above incentives remain in place.Let me be clear: I am not making any claims of conspiratorial actions to prevent universal healthcare in the US. I am saying that the shape of the current system creates incredibly strong incentives for the people who have the most power in the system to refuse change. They may not know the incentives exist, they may or may not think in the same terms I’ve used, but the incentives shape what is the easiest course of action in the system.

occasionally at work i use the robots to prove i am spending my tokens. today i tried to get the robot to transform a document i'd written into the content of a slideshow. it populated 5 slides out of 75, and did not delete the other ones. one of the slides it made is glorious.
a slide saying Milestone 1: November 2026 Target, with a subhed in lorem ipsum. Below this, is a timeline with 4 dots, and above each dot is the heading November 2026, implying that once November 2026 arrives, it will keep arriving perpetually.

I'm reading Butler's "Who's Afraid of Gender" and they use the concept of a phantasm to explore the various anti gender groups. it seems like a rich framework for the fears people have of imagining better futures. (screenshots are Butler's explanations)

If one's opponents are gripped with fear, overwhelmed by the threat of a dangerous phantasm, then another approach has to emerge. It seems we are not in a public debate at all, precisely because there is no text in the room, no agreement on terms, and fear and hatred have flooded the landscape where critical thought should be thriving, It is a phantasmatic scene. In referring to a "phantasmatic scene," I adapt the theoretical formulation of Jean Laplanche, the late French psychoanalyst, for thinking about psychosocial phenomena. For Laplanche, fantasy is not simply the product of the imagination—a wholly subjective reality— but in its most fundamental form has to be understood as a syntactical arrangement of elements of psychic life. Fantasy, then, is not just a creation of the mind, a subliminal reverie, but an organization of desire and anxiety that follows certain structural and organizational rules, drawing on both unconscious and conscious material. I would suggest that the organization or syntax of dreams and fantasy is at once social and psychic. Although Laplanche was interested in infancy and the formation of an original fantasy, I am asking whether we can appropriate some aspects of his view to understand anti-gender as a phantasmatic scene. My wager is that we will be better able to respond to this movement and its discourse by framing the matter this way. For when the scene is set, and something called gender is imagined to be acting on children or affecting the public in nefarious and destructive ways, "gender" substitutes for a complex set of anxieties and becomes an overdetermined site where the fear of destruction gathers,Wherever it operates, the phantasm brings with it a sadistic elation over being freed of new ethical constraints apparently imposed by feminist and LGBTQIA+ agendas or their mainstreaming apologists. What is remarkable and disturbing is the way that this moral campaign relishes experimenting with various ways of denying the very existence of others, stripping them of rights, refusing their reality, restricting basic freedoms, engaging in shameless forms of racial hatred, and controlling, demeaning, caricaturing, pathologiz-ing, and criminalizing those lives. Hatred is stoked and rationalized by moral righteousness, and all those damaged and destroyed by hateful movements are cast as the truer agents of destruction. These projections and reversals structure the phantasmatic scene of "gender." This leaves us with two urgent questions: Who is out to destroy whom? And how do forms of shared and escalating moral sadism pass themselves off as a virtuous order?3
The task is not only to reveal the falsehood but also to deflate the power of the phantasm to circulate and convince, and to produce another imaginary in which the targets of the anti-gender movement ally with one another to oppose those who would destroy their right to inhabit the world in ways that are livable and free.
