thanks konami for the free castlevania 1 for mobile, with an awkward small screen, gross touch controls (but what can you do), bizarre sound emulation, a 1988 on the title screen(?), and a manual that says the select button (used only on the game over screen) is "for choosing number of players"(???)

i love that the music in this room is just a looped sound effect, loaded into ram with the rest of the area, so the game can just instantly drop you in that room and play different music without even a loading screen

zelda 2 is great but yeah it kind of feels like the core of it is a cool combat system prototype that didn't get fully baked. i finished it for the first time a year ago, and idk if i would've done it without using save states for the last dungeon. they did manage to pack a lot of cool stuff in tho!

never needed to for n64 games as a kid. jaguar games though? absolutely. i didn't get an NES until years later, but the jaguar's deal is similar to the NES, where games simply have a one third shot of booting properly after inserting them into the system
