Over the last year, I’ve started and halted three different novels and two novellas. The stories are solid and worth telling, I’m confident about that, but each one has some issue that I can’t get past. Often, it’s an issue I can’t even recognize.

Rough, and I mean ROUGH, draft complete! 💪 Now I'm going to put it down for a minute and do about a thousand critiques I've been neglecting.

Thanks! I'm a long way from beta feedback, still gotta put it through my crit group first, but I'll keep you in mind 🙂

On my last 5-7k words of the draft I have to keep reminding myself: 1) fix it in post 2) fix it in post 3) fix it in post

Anyone else think it's a bit unfair that a tight ass is a good thing to have but a bad thing to be?

About 25 and 55k words. First draft will probably land around 28-29 at ~60k and aiming for 65k-70k for the final.

My process will be to go back to the beginning with my revision notes and polish the chapters. As I go, I'll post them to my crit group until I get to a place where I feel the story is beyond what crits can do. At that point I'll send it out for beta for final revisions while I work on the cover 🙂

I usually would have, but getting those sweet sweet dopamine hits has been keeping me from finishing things this year. This time, I'm trying out finishing, then giving chapters to my critique partners as I polish them on my second pass.

Closing in on 90%. All the big beats are lined up, just laying out all the connective tissue. It's hard to know what I'm missing for a scene until it's right there. Sometimes it just comes out, sometimes it's tough.

I've been trying a new method of first draft based on some advice I heard in an author interview. They said, "Don't look back." And it's been valuable, but tough to just keep moving and saying "I'll fix it in post" lol.

I'm learning what needs to be done in revisions 😂 but overall it's coming together nicely. Two lifelong friends investigate a psychic attack at a wedding and stumble into a golden artifact, disappearing psychics, and a cult determined to solve a disagreement.

100%, but I've learned to fall into a story as well. It took time. Critiquing and doing beta reads has really helped because I also want reader feedback, so I strive to be the change I want to see in the world 😉

This week, I was feeling artsy while sharpening knives: "Silent bubbles rise from soaking stones sat upright in a pitcher of warm water. Two tones of grey, white, and clay are the colors in this rainbow, dull but fine beneath the crystal-clear shimmer."

5:00am - wake up, let the dogs out, and draft on the porch as they dogs scream into the void of the forest. As shocks of autonomic distress strike me, similar in frequency to the compression waves my canine companions, I have to wonder: am I practicing focus or just slowly eroding my sanity? 🤷‍♂️

Hit 40k words and heading into Act III of my new novel. It felt crappy to leave a different work behind, but at some point you have to listen to what you’re telling yourself. This work has been such a blast to write! Looking forward to getting the next 25k words down.

I've been remodeling* for 5 years and only now did I realize you can use a plumbers wrench to open PVC primer and cement cans…. The amount of time I have lost in the manly struggle to open one of these things is unaccountable. *I'm one of the good ones, that's why I can't make a living off it.

One of the greatest strengths of being a writer is the ability to give nearly any kind of suffering meaning. I had heat exhaustion this weekend and as my vision pulsed and I laid soaking in a tub wishing that some diety would either smite me or absolve me, I realized this was just research.
