I also go a bit into some of our other work on ownership issues, discussing more on why this area of the speech is particularly popular.

As Steve outlines below, we have new research out today. For those who prefer paragraphs to graphs when it comes to taking in information, I've written about them here for @politicshome.bsky.social. With some caveats, they're very good for Andy Burnham: www.politicshome.com/opinion/arti...

Britain wants a big change in ownership, and fortunately enough, Rochdale pioneered much of the change we need over a century ago. Co-ops have spent decades making the case that ownership matters so not surprised to see the public responsive to the argument - people know this setup doesn’t work.

Ownership matters. New research from Persuasion UK following Andy Burnham’s conference speech suggests arguments about economic power, public control and ownership resonate with voters. That conversation should include sharing ownership and putting more power in more hands.

🚨 NEW: More community ownership. More co-operatives. High streets that work for the people who live there. From a stronger Community Right to Buy to bringing empty shops back into use, we’re putting more power and ownership into local hands. 🐝

Britain is ready to build renewable power that communities own, with profits staying in the places that generate it. Meanwhile, Reform is campaigning to stop that generation and telling us to enjoy the heat instead. The Local Power Plan will put clean generation in local hands.

In his first speech as Leader of the Labour Party, Andy Burnham set out the argument we have been making for a century: real power for the places and people who've been shut out of it. Now is the moment for co-operation, community ownership, and local control. 🐝

While garden hoses run dry and our rivers fill with waste, shareholders' pockets have been filled with cash that should have been invested in our water system. Debt and dividends are draining Britain's water supply. We need to change the ownership structure.

Co-ops aren’t just a nice-to-have - they’re essential to sustainably rebuild in Ukraine. From Rwanda to Guatemala, co-operative ownership gave divided communities a shared economic stake, denying extraction and clientelism the vacuum they usually fill after conflict.
