What makes this infuriating is you just know they'd be the first ones to whine if a law was past that simply said "no sex checks or challenges allowed with regards to toilets"

Yeah, the DUP makes a lot more sense when you accept Ian Paisley Snr was a lot closer to Sinn Fein/IRA in terms of attitudes to democracy than the mainstream parties

"Badenoch has cemented her image and now she wants to put her party back on the big stage" - Laura Kuenssberg. When Badenoch became leader, the Tories were on 27%. They are now 17%.

The open secret re: the Greens is that the UK has a tiny set of full time rabid ‘left-wing’ antisemites who move from org to org trying to turn them into full time monomaniacal antisemites like themselves.

Dunno what possesses someone to do a "i told you so post" to somebody who is clearly upset about something that they had no ability to prevent, but whatever it is, it gets a blocking

Media pundits - you don't actually need to parse opinion polls or focus groups to know that this stuff is mad, and will be deeply unpopular whenever people notice

This is why I think "settled colonial" schema to understand Israel is unhelpful. It's a normal post-ww2 ethnic cleansing national state. It's just people have forgotten what the rest of the 1940s were really like.

Fighting this flith is going to be agony for the Greens, much worse than it was for Labour, because there's no tradition or mechanisms for fighting entryism. And the way politics is evolving, you're not going to keep your seats as Greens anyway. You swerve the pain & may keep your seats as LibDems

If I was the Green MPs in Tory facing seats I'd be calling Ed Davey about doing a deal

Sure but impeachment isn't a magic wand to fix that problem. Congress will have to instead use its powers to hold witnesses who refuse to coopetate in contempt, and punish them

Increasingly fear one Western country is gonna have to collapse into an actual civil war/dictatorship for the rest to take the necessary steps to move away from the brink so many of us are rapidly approaching. Just pray the salutary example isn't us or the one nation that can destroy us all

Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 19h
I have. I think it's really weakly argued by his standards. Just s refusal to learn from what went wrong last time. The model should be what the GOP did with Benghazi. Notice how there was no impeachment proceedings there? You can do aggressive accountability without walking into that bear trap
100
Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 19h
Yeah we're just gonna have to disagree.
100
Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 19h
Likewise the focus on trying to build an impeachment case over Russia/Ukraine because that was the best chance of winning GOP votes, sent the anti-Trump case down a path that just didn't connect with the public

Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 19h
Pelsoi should have moved the impeachment vote on the night of the 6th Janurary. After the mistaken decision to let Trump serve out his term, when it became clear that McConnell wasn't gonna go a retrospective impeachment, they should have begun immediate criminal proceedings.
130
Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 19h
No it wasn't! I'm sorry it's insane to say something that helped Trump was the right thing to do!
210
Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 19h
Again, i didn't say don't impeach Hegseth (or anyone else). I said don't impeach anyone unless you think you have an actual shot of securing enough votes for a conviction. The only benefit to impeachment is forcing someone out - if you can't do that, just use the congressional committees

Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 19h
Too bad you were hoping for "We will fix Britain's broken water industry" to "we will nationalise Thames Water" to "we will improve London's drinking water" to "of course we will fix that leaky pipe for you Stephen"

Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 19h
And the best way to demonstrate the system isn't fit for purpose is to refuse to use it, and promise a new Democratic administration will pursue criminal charges
100
Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 19h
We can see with both Clinton and Trump that acquittal means acquittal. Both Clinton (50/50 on one count) and Trump (majority vote in favour of his second impeachment) were helped by their acquitals
200
Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 19h
But we have no evidence that happens. The treatment of impeachment as a legal process, means the charges becomer narrower, more harshly judged by the media, and less relevant to the public. And the acquittal is treated as a boost to the administration, and a failure on the part of the Democrsts
100
Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 20h
Again, if you have the numbers, then sure. But charging ahead into an inevitable acquittal is the opposite of accountability
100
Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 20h
Yeah I just flatly disagree. If you know it's not going to work, it's just helping the administration. You can do the investigations without the inevitably doomed trial
100
Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 20h
Yeah, agreed
100
Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 20h
But it doesn't do that!
110
Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 20h
Again, you can have all the investigations without the process that ultimately ends with a process that gives a greater platform for the defence and that you don't control.
100
Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 20h
What's the benefit? I really don't see one
200
Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 20h
Yeah but that's not true; the accountability stuff can be done by the various congressional committees. All your doing is giving the administration a platform to defend themselves, one that will be controlled by their co-partisan. Just gather the evidence & wait for criminal investigations in 2029
020
Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 20h
I would not even consider it unless the Democrats meaningfully beat their polls in the Senate. You're never going to get more than a handful of Republicans to vote for it, so you need Democratic Senator numbers to be closer to 60 than 50
050
Will Cooling @willcooling.bsky.social · 20h
This obsession with impeachment is really weird. Unless you have a genuine shot of securing a conviction, all you're doing is ceding control over the process to John Roberts and setting up positive news story for the administration when the inevitable acquitals occur.

I think all the evidence we have is that Labour is just hostile to this entire business model, given they keep refusing to accept that this is legal

Really shows the bigotry of low expectations that O'Brien was seen as being unusually thoughtful for a Tory

I just used Uber Courier to send some boots my stepson had left here to where he was doing some shopping Now as convenient as that was for me, I'm open to the argument I shouldn't be able to do it. But imo Labour needs to be honest if it actually thinks that rather than hide behind employment law

People need to think more clearly about how badly Badenoch comes across during every local election or party conference. Her alright personal ratings are primarily a consequence of people not really paying attention. She is simply not up to a general election campaign, let alone leading a government

I think we're talking at cross purposes. I agree the regional tier should be parliamentary - that's the GLA and Combined Authority level (remember Greater Manchester basically has many people as Wales, & Greater London has more than Scotland). But executive mayors could work at a lower level
