Conceptual figure describing how evidence from climate-smart land management studies links land-use systems, biogeochemical and biophysical outcomes, and social and economic contexts. A practice's climate-smart status is determined by its net climate impact (CO2, CH4, and N2O combined), while its adoption and durability at scale are separately shaped by context-specific social feasibility and economic viability, meaning a climate-smart practice may still see limited or uneven adoption depending on social and economic factors. In our review, we found uneven representation of studies across systems and incomplete greenhouse gas accounting, making it challenging to assess if, when, where, and how land management practices deliver climate benefits.

This study assessed SOC stocks, POM, MAOM, organic functional groups and soil biological activity at two sites where soybean was grown annually in the main season, followed by different second-season systems. The mix of cover crops, which combined greater residue input with more diverse aboveground biomass quality, was associated with a more chemically diverse organic matter pool, higher biological activity and greater POM. The cover crop mix increased POM by 53%, while MAOM responses varied according to site and soil depth. Structural equation modelling indicated positive associations among aboveground biomass, soil biological activity, MAOM and SOC stocks. The findings provide field-based evidence that diverse cover crops can enhance soil carbon accrual in tropical agroecosystems.
