I have released my most powerful & high-yielding corn yet. It has already escaped my field & invaded three soybean farms. I fear it will soon kill all humans. But rather than quit corn & work to stop the apocalypse, I'm releasing even better corn in 3 months. Meanwhile, please use corn responsibly.

Selection, constraints, and contingency drive mosaic patterns of evolution during the carangarian adaptive radiation
Adaptive radiations generate remarkable morphological diversity, yet traits often diversify at different rates and modes, producing mosaic patterns of evolution. Modularity, the semiautonomous organization of traits, can shape how selection and ...

If you haven't experienced the alpine during peak wildflower season, you should! I've never been so speechless and infatuated with a landscape in my life. The Brown-capped Rosy-Finches and pika were a spectacular cherry on top.

Really, absurdly disappointing. I'm teaching a field course focused on environmental threats to Colorado's biodiversity next month and will have students contribute to citizen science projects as impactful coursework. We'll have some lively discussion about this news, I'm sure. Yikes.

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.
Graphs showing 25 years of budgets for the National Institute of Health, NASA, and the NSF. In all cases, the proposed budget for next year is far, far below any year of the previous quarter century.

After five incredible years in Colorado, I’m returning to my home place in August to start as an Assistant Professor of Biology at my alma mater, Xavier University! Stay tuned for more ornithological, museum, and teaching goodness once the Imfeld Lab has flocked back to Cincinnati.
A happy fellow posing at his alma mater on a glorious spring morning. Trees are leafing out, shrubs are flowering, and academic journeys are coming full circle.
