whirlwind013.bsky.social @whirlwind013.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Exactly so. The implication of the arguments is that if more Defence spending is needed, it is needed right now for near future readiness (i.e. *by* 2030); but that argument is quite distinct from thinking Defence spending should be such-&-such % in the 2030s and onwards. 000

whirlwind013.bsky.social @whirlwind013.bsky.social · 04/08/2026Yes. Dunkirk was not considered definitively the end of the matter, so moving troops back to France in the hope of stabilising the situation was natural. In hindsight it looks hopeless but not at the time. After all, the beginning of WW1 looked pretty awful too. 010

whirlwind013.bsky.social @whirlwind013.bsky.social · 04/08/2026Agreed, there is no justification for presenting Dunkirk as an entirely British action; or even thinking of there being a French 'contribution' - the whole thing makes little sense if thought of in those terms. 070
whirlwind013.bsky.social @whirlwind013.bsky.social · 04/08/2026That is too harsh in the opposite direction. The UK did not do that either (cf. the number of French soldiers evacuated from Dunkirk, the attempts to send another BEF). 290
whirlwind013.bsky.social @whirlwind013.bsky.social · 02/08/2026I don't think it is true anyway: the message of The Green Berets was "the Vietnam War is justified", not that "war is good" (I think criticism of the film elided the two positions). 000

If a leader should have committed to an SDR on taking office, why not do your own SDR before taking office? If you don't do it before, then isn't your entire govt strategy at risk from its output?
