Also Simon and @davidstubbs.bsky.social could be withering about records and bands I liked. That was bizarrely enjoyable. Could never take it personally: the idea of writing in and saying ‘who the hell do you think you are etc’, like some did - just embarrassing.

He must have joined Melody Maker just as I started reading it (end of 85) and esp enjoying the way he compares his exhilarating writing on rock music from then with how he views some of it now. Highly recommended, as all his books are.
