A reminder for the #PyCon organizing committee(s): Closed captioning is generally only useful for deaf and HoH people when the latency is less than 500 ms. So far, the CC I’ve seen for talks has been far slower, on the order of 5 seconds. The poor acoustics of the presentation rooms don’t help.

I get the political urgency for a reboot of the Democratic brand for more media-savvy leadership. But a lot is built around their disastrous defeat in the 2024 elections. There is a danger of generalizing about an anomalous post-covid anti-incumbency year when the defeat was actually fairly narrow.

Theoretical physicist who also does research in humanities using critical theories. It’s interesting how when it comes down to it, no one is mad at quantum field theory being confusing — for physicists too — but they’re mad at humanists for also having analytic frameworks that take time to learn.

I can't help but notice that @elonmusk's new TweetDeck - hereafter named "ElonDeck" - in addition to being slower than before makes it much harder to block spam-followers. To block, you have to go to the main Twitter website, which gives them a chance to serve an ad. Brilliant.

The quality of closed captioning on @NewsHour's youtube broadcasts has declined dramatically in the last month. They used to be very good, so I'm not sure what changed, but it's so bad now even a family member with Alzheimer's disease notices it's clearly wrong. #a11y failure.
