Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 3hI know people who did time/got sued into the ground for copyright infringement, and I’ve been thinking about them a lot lately. One Easy Trick to equalize things would make it so that corporate officers have skin in the game. Elon ought to be looking at prison for his CSAM machine. 082
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 4hIt’s even stranger given he comes from dandies, not yokels. Personally, I don’t think I’d be so eager to bring up family if mine were slave owners who “pivoted” into sharecropping. 000
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 8hYou get whiffs of that in the story anyway -- that line about him pulling out his pistol “just in case”. The way he comes off in this, and with his background (and with his mother…) I think in 2 years either he’s back in the same place, or he’s in the ground. I hope he gets some real help. 010
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 03/10/2026My primary mode of transportation is my (human-powered) bike. My secondary mode? My feet. The thing that’s ruining civilization is the death of reading comprehension and nuance. I don’t know what it is about this discussion that makes people turn off their brains, but it’s frustrating. 010
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 03/10/2026TPS issued about 160x more charges for driving causing harm/death against cars than “micro mobility” users. Toronto traffic counts tracked ~500M vehicles vs 4.5M bicycles over the same period (~111x). E-bikes make up about 10% of those bicycles. What type of bike do you think is injuring people? 000
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Do you know what the best part of that argument is? It is absolutely true (and it’s true in the absolute) that cars cause more injuries and fatalities than e-bikes, but is it disproportionately more? 100
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 03/10/2026I know, I was there. If you think “we don’t regulate” vs “we regulate badly” is a useful hair to split, then I’m glad you cleared that up. I’m going to mute this now though. 000
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 02/10/2026We inspect cars. We regulate what is/isn’t street legal. Once in a blue moon we even pull licenses. We don’t do that with e-bikes, and we should — well, not the license part. If we did, we wouldn’t have what are functionally shitty e-motorcycles with vestigial pedals ripping down the sidewalk. 100
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I think you’ve misunderstood. I’m not defending drivers, I’m saying that we regulate them and have avenues for recourse, whether we use them or not. If you just want me to say drivers are dangerous assholes too, sure, stipulated. 200
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 02/10/2026yikes, and a *sensitive* outlier, at that. 000
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I don’t really want to get into an argument about which is worse. They can both be bad. 110
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I haven’t got a clue, but I’m sure you’ll be happy to do the research and get back to me. My point wasn’t that cars are good, it’s that e-bikes are a cancer. I want people to earn their speed: by the time you can sustain 30km/h organically you’ve generally figured out how not to be a danger. 100
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 02/10/2026… whatever your local laws permit? I don’t care about Vantucky. 100
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I don’t pay a lot of of attention to the school near me, but the lack of any bike infra + the traffic chaos at 9 and 3 suggests it’s uncommon there. Maybe it’s a city vs suburb split, but I have genuinely never seen an e-bike with a passenger that wasn’t a thermal bag. Real bike? Sure. 000
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 02/10/2026You sound like an outlier to me. You also sound like an American: 30km/h is a common limit here. We don’t do miles. 100
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 02/10/2026The “legit e-bike industry” doesn’t get to define regulatory distinctions. Every one of those classes is faster than the bike lane/route speed limits in my city, pedal assist is a joke, and the people these attract *don’t know how to ride safely at that speed* 300
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Nothing beats having some wobbly food courier on a 60+ pound “bike” with vestigial pedals and a rusted-solid chain blast past you in a protected lane. Nuke these vendors from orbit. 030
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 02/10/2026And I don’t want to be a car apologist, but we train (poorly, but it’s there) and license drivers, and don’t permit cars in protected bike lanes or to drive on sidewalks. 360
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Reel it in. JFK might be a hero, but the Kennedy family sure as hell aren’t. 220

Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 02/09/2026It’s strange how that sticks: I wasn’t directly affected, it was too early to grasp how much would happen next, I’m not sure I fully understood what I’d just seen — but I still remember that one moment with perfect clarity… almost like a car crash survivor or something. 100
Donald Quiporne @whatdoesitmatter.bsky.social · 02/09/2026I remember waking up before an afternoon shift and turning on CNN for some noise while I ate breakfast. The first tower was already on fire, but that was ‘just a fire’ — until the camera caught the second plane come in. 100
