Chinook salmon have recolonised 88% of their historic range on the Klamath River, with more than 13,000 fish passing the old Iron Gate Dam site in 2025, up from 7,700 the year before. Two years after the dams’ removal, it’s going better than anyone predicted. buff.ly/pToC9gB #ShareGoodNewsToo

While waiting out comments from reviewers on my thesis, I made a 2-month visit to the Goodfish lab at the University of Tasmania! Working with sand flathead to understand how they are impacted by fishing pressure was a really meaningful application of what I’ve been learning throughout my PhD 🐟🧪
Six fish scientists (three of which are wearing almost identical denim caps) with their arms around each other in a patio restaurant at night. There is a green bus behind them. Two brown fish with yellow-white spots and very triangular heads inside plastic chambers with lots of tubing and pumps attached. Two fools snorkeling in full neoprene with a red buoy. The bay is beautiful, the sky is blue, but the water is so so cold!A scientist gives up on it all and walks into the snow-flecked mountains of Tasmania along a narrow weathered boardwalk surrounded by heath-like alpine plants.

This was an effort by the whole @clark-ecophys.bsky.social lab group to test the claim that G. maculatus is an “oxyconforming” species - basically, that its metabolism changes in balance with oxygen availability. We also tested whether exposure to salinity impacted hypoxia tolerance.
Three stacked scatterplots showing oxygen uptake rate (metabolism) on the y-axis and dissolved oxygen as % saturation on the x-axis. This figure shows three exemplary traces, where SMR does not decline with decreasing DO along the theoretical oxyconforming line, but rather is maintained steadily even at low O2 levels.
