So then we decided we would call them our favourite novels instead, because they worked for us when we read, and maybe even reread them. What about you? What is your favourite book?

Westmeath Libraries @westmeathlibraries.bsky.social · 18/05/2026
Some books work because of what the reader themselves is living through, or what age they are when they first encounter them. Is it actually possible to have a best book? Some books suit some moods, and some do not.

Westmeath Libraries @westmeathlibraries.bsky.social · 18/05/2026
But as we chatted we came more to wonder what does "best" even mean here. All these books are available through your local library, if you aren't yet a member why not join today - it is free and we don't charge any late fines.

Westmeath Libraries @westmeathlibraries.bsky.social · 18/05/2026
But then we moved on to what we individually would say is the "best book". Some suggestions here were Beloved, Ulysses, Address Unknown, Anne of Green Gables, Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Dollmaker.

Westmeath Libraries @westmeathlibraries.bsky.social · 18/05/2026
Our first topic of conversation was about the number one novel, to be honest, nobody here would have chosen this title as our best book ever. We did wonder was it simply that a lot of people were familiar with it, and so it came to mind when asked.
