A profound disappointment & major blow against any hope for democratic governance over our media system. Individual policymakers & media owners keep failing us, succumbing to perverse incentives. It's a systemic failure, requiring a structural overhaul of our entire media system from root to branch.

I’ve long been embarrassed by who I am ashamed to admit is my current Governor. Just putting it out into the world that there are those of us who hail from the same state and faith tradition as Cox and yet were never deceived by this man.

The instinctual reaction to these kinds of essays will produce an enormous swath of experiences, both in support and opposition. There are those whose background would necessitate disconnecting from one’s family, sad to say. There are others whose experiences do not, and yet they happen anyway.

From Lowell Bennion’s “The Unknown Testament” (1988) #sundaythoughts
Theology is of no value if it substitutes for social morality. Devils also believe and tremble. To be righteous, belief must include concern for our fellow human beings. Religious ordinances and rituals are vain if they do not encourage spirituality and morality. Church life is not an end in itself but a place to be inspired to go forth and deal honestly and compassionately with each other.

This is a lesson we must learn over and over. Reading the Hebrew prophets with their passionate clarity is, in my opinion, an excellent way to renew our commitment to justice and mercy.

Pioneer Day: A complicated occasion, as is any instance of displacement & additional settlement to an inhabited land. There were violent conflicts as well as peaceful coexistence among communities. I wish people could acknowledge both aspects w/o being ignorantly proud or dismissively contemptuous

The discourse around IMAX re: Nolan movies is silly imo. A far greater issue is the sound in his films, which for years has been garbage

From Hugh Nibley’s “Man’s Dominion, or Subduing the Earth”
The explanation of this all-out hostility is simple. “The animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdoms abide the law of their Creator; the whole earth and all things pertaining to it, except man, abide the law of their creation,” while “man, who is the offspring of the Gods, will not become subject to the most reasonable and self-exalting principles.” With all things going in one direction, men, stubbornly going in the opposite direction, naturally find themselves in the position of one going the wrong way on the freeway during rush hour; the struggle to live becomes a fight against nature. Having made himself allergic to almost everything by the Fall, man is given the choice of changing his nature so that the animal and vegetable creation will cease to afflict and torment him, or else waging a truceless war of extermination against all that annoys him until he renders the earth completely uninhabitable. —Hugh Nibley, “Man’s Dominion, or Subduing the Earth”

A message for all my Salt Lake City/Valley peeps
I am reaching out because I'm in charge of City Weekly's City Guide booklet this year. While most of the pieces are in place, I wanted to include small blurbs from locals about their experience and love for Salt Lake City. If you have an interest to do so, we'd welcome your feedback on the following questions:

- What does Salt Lake City mean to me?
- Any concise words of wisdom for a newcomer to the Salt Lake area?
- What dish or food item would you recommend to someone fresh to the area?
- What is your favorite local event of the year?

I need all responses by next Wednesday (March 25) morning, if possible. Feel free to send them directly to me at wlong@cityweekly.net. (Word length cannot exceed 100 characters, please.) We'd be honored to include your voice in this year's edition!

Taking time to do this today. I grew up in an old logging town in Oregon, where I once made a lot of enemies by doing a school project on the endangered spotted owl. These forests welcome me every time I visit—I'll always associate them with home, with rest and peace. They deserve their peace, too.
