Finally, we have a banger Resident Evil movie. Lean, mean, bloody as hell & hilarious. Abrams embodies the average terrified player experience, wholly unprepared for the onslaught of horrors. The more I think about it, the more I like it. My review at Dread:

The first of my reader's choice essays this month is on Vera Drew's excellent THE PEOPLE'S JOKER. Watch this film if you haven't already!! www.patreon.com/willowcately...
a still from The People's Joker of Vera Drew dressed as Joker the Harlequin in a dreamy purple spaceVera Drew’s extravaganza of propulsive, and oftentimes garish coherency of digital cinematography, and crude animation, was in the spirit of Joel Schumacher’s wind-swept, erotic drag-Batman, and it was the first thing that pulled me in when I saw The People’s Joker for the first time in the Fall of 2023. Her maximalist tendencies certainly stand out in this age of underlit photography, and morbid seriousness in genre filmmaking. Schumacher’s Batman movies were shot by photographer Stephen Goldblatt, and they most closely resemble his decadent music video stylization of Tony Scott’s bisexual vampire film The Hunger. In the hands of expressionistic directors like Scott and Schumacher, Goldblatt transcended the bounds of decency and gave life to images that were explosively indecent, baroque, and humming with profane sensuality. In the case of the Schumacher Batman movies, it was rendered as a strange melodrama, and he brought to the surface a characteristic of dress-up that was always present in the comics, but not always exploited. In the comics, Batman gave the rest of Gotham City the permission to come out of the proverbial closet and let their alternate identities become their true selves. It sounds so cliche and boring when written out like that, as if it were a testament to queer joy, but it never really played out like that in the books, or in those 90s films. These were worlds of skin-tight leather, purring blonde vixens with kitten-ish flights of fancy, and slobbering, fish-encrusted drag kings taking their trauma to city hall and making the world fabulously indecent. The culture seemed to wake up to the aims of 90s Batman around the time of Batman and Robin, and despite looking and feeling like a sibling film to the property, dating back to the 60s TV series, audiences said the quiet part out loud when they disposed of both it and Batman Forever primarily for reasons of homophobia....cont.t cannot be overstated how much The People’s Joker felt like a molotov cocktail being hurled at both the conglomeration of the Superhero film industry, and at the respectability politics that had constrained trans cinema for the better part of the early 21st century. Transgender stories on film have a long history of feeling repressed due to sociological factors such as the supposed necessities of closeting, and the expectations of going stealth that were endemic to the process of a “successful” medical transition. This kept our cinema locked away in hospital waiting rooms for a very long time, unless one went looking for queer films on the margins. Films which weren’t always the easiest to procure. On the Hollywood side of things, our stories were routinely positioned as liberal pablum ending in the matrydom of a trans figure meant to be pitied. Fairy tales of castrated danish girls who really thought they could become real, but always flew too close to the sun in pursuit of their desired change. It’s no wonder that trans cinephiles took one look at movies about the dead and dying trans figures of the past, and opted for the disreputable characters of the trans feminine grotesque in the guise of horror films like Sleepaway Camp or even The Silence of the Lambs. We had to search elsewhere for relevance without a canon, and we forced a transition upon existing frameworks of genre, like the hypervisible women in trouble in David Lynch’s films, or in the ever-changing bodies of David Cronenberg’s tapestry of sensual Body Beautiful flesh things. The modern trans film image is born of these circumstances, and of economic restrictions, forcing directors to be crafty while they brought their own histories to existing forms of storytelling.
