Sanrio Vfes in VRChat is so cute 🥲 Here’s some of the cosmetic items available: headbands and the mochipoly (モチポリ) avatar with sanrio costumes!! Though I wish there was some Marroncream or Hanamaruobake representation…
VRChat screenshot: A humanoid avatar with downturnt rabbit ears and a blue shirt reaching towards a display of Sanrio character headbands.VRChat screenshot: A humanoid avatar wearing a headband modelled after Sanrio’s ‘Usahana’ character, standing beside a screen with sliders for adjusting the size, height, rotation, and placement of the headband.VRChat screenshot: A white, blobby avatar wearing a pink costume fashioned after Sanrio’s ‘My Sweet Piano’ character, standing beside a screen with different Sanrio costume options.

Two recent things to be thankful for: my presentation at AANZCA on crip time and social VR; and a chat with students of a digital media governance course on the intersections of VR and disability.
Powerpoint slide with the title text: “Crip time and social virtual reality: Frictions of synchronicity and chrononormativity” and the footer text “AANZCA 2024 — Disability Communication Panel II: Crip Space/Time and Media”. Accompanied by an avatar of a white-costumed spiderman in a pink and blue Hawaiian shirt, winking and point to a sign that says “OSC”. Powerpoint slide with the title text: “Virtual reality and disability: What needs governing?”. Accompanied by four images: of an avatar standing in front of a board with the ASL alphabet, holding up the sign for the letter “L”; a wheelchair user wearing a VR headset; arms spread in joy; the mouse character from the VR game “Moss”; and two Rec Room avatars wearing the Autism and Neurodiversity Awareness Month hoodie.

Scrolling through user reception to this (very long-awaited) feature in VRC and seeing obvious concerns about data privacy, desires for adult social spaces (safe spaces away from children!), and expectations for the silo-ing of players (fears of being stuck in ‘Quest kid day care’).

early morning interview set-up 🙂‍↕️
Avatar with downturnt rabbit ears and a long-sleeved blue top sitting at an al fresco café seat, empty chair on the opposite side, with a blue budgie perched on their finger. Clock on the back wall reads ‘05:41’

When creating PDFs, avoid using "Print to PDF." A screen reader user may still be able to access the text of PDFs created this way, but heading structure, alternative text, and any other tag structure will be lost. Using "Save As" or "Export" can preserve these tags.

Great piece on CAVRN, which prompted me to think back to @trilliz.bsky.social's discussion of how ads shape cultural images of a technology's intended uses and users in her book, Restricted Access—and how we can turn to disability to unsettle and interrogate these hegemonic user arrangements.

Please read and sign this position. People with ME and other energy limiting chronic illness are NOT lazy. They can’t WILL themselves better. If you push them - it causes devastating harm. It’s junk science, bad medicine and it needs to stop.

disability justice needs less "disabled people can bring just as much profit to your endeavor" and more "dignity and comfort not should be based on productivity"

Is the government about to accidentally ban kids under 16 from games? I wrote a piece with @darthtayrah.bsky.social on why they shouldn't. theconversation.com/online-games... (they also shouldn't ban social media!)
theconversation.com
Online games should not be included in Australia’s social media ban – they are critical for kids’ social lives
Australia is set to ban kids under 16 from social media. Depending on the definition, online games with social features could be in the firing line – which would be detrimental.
