There are some interesting terms here! Britain: The Greek geographer, explorer and astronomer Pytheas of Massalia left the first documented record of a name. He navigated to, and referred to, the Prettanike nesoi, Πρετανικαι νησοι - generally understood as 'the isles of the painted people'.

So... we've been doing some work on local place names. Here's an interesting one. Cæ Tomla. Cæ - enclosed field Tom <- Twmp - lump(s) La <- Lle - place The field with lump(s) in..... So it's likely the were something like burial mounds in before the houses were built there!

Today (26 October) is the feast day of Saint Gwynnog. Saint Gwynnog was the son of Saint Gildas, who was in turn the son of King Caw. He settled in Cornwall, where he is known as Winnoc, and Pinnock, and Winnow.

The coming Monday is the Autumn Equinox. In Cymraeg, this can be referred to as: Alban Elfed It was traditional here in the South East to hold an Eisteddfod to mark the occasion - as can be seen here in 1872.

The original tribe in the South East of Cymru were the Silures. The Roman invasion of the other parts of Britain began in AD43. Having swept across the tribes, Ostorius encountered the local inhabitants in AD48. The Silures remained undefeated, despite 30 years of attempts.
