Brave RNLI volunteers being attacked for risking their lives to save others at sea is awful. So I've signed an open letter of thanks for the RNLI letting them know these thugs do not speak for the rest of us. Add your name?

Happy Pride, London! 🏳️‍🌈 At my Pride Reception earlier this week, we celebrated love, authenticity and the trailblazers who paved the way for our LGBTQIA+ communities to live openly and proudly today.

A few of the placards seen today as the fash got chased off Buchanan Street. Never forget: the far right are indeed dangerous and wicked; and they are also weird and pathetic, and we should say so.
Placard: "Racism is weird. Have you tried hobbies?"Placard: "Send racists home to think again".Placard: "Radicalised by basic decency".Placard: "Psst. Fascists can't dance. (Pass it on.)"

Fascinating age split on this one. Young people are both more likely to use AI and more likely to want it to disappear.

british fan chat
cartoon for the guardian by Stephen Collins - script as follows:

[Scene is a darkened LOFT. Amongst the boxes and junk are FOUR KNACKERED OLD FANS - three tower fans and one circular, with cracked grey plastic and buttons missing. One fan, TOWER FAN 1, is a bit taller than the others, and is addressing them]

1
TOWER FAN 1:
Right lads, get ready.

2
TOWER FAN 1:
This is our time.

3
TOWER FAN 1:
The time when we remember who we are, and why we’re here.

4
TOWER FAN 1:
We are the four crap fans in a British person’s loft,

and we are here to make absolutely no difference whatsoever.

5
TOWER FAN 1:
I know what you’re
thinking, lads:

6
TOWER FAN 1:
Surely this will be the year they finally replace us?

7
TOWER FAN 1:
Our plastic’s gone all brown... I haven’t oscillated since 2018...

8
TOWER FAN 1:
Dave here sounds like a spitfire and blows like a sad cat’s sigh…

TOWER FAN 2:
Cheers mate

9
TOWER FAN 1:
But no. These people are British, and every year, they forget the sun exists.

By the time they remember,
new fans will cost *four million pounds* on Amazon.

10
TOWER FAN 1:
So we’ll be back down there... shovelling thick air across the moaning faces of a species that cannot comprehend the concept of air conditioning, or even just closing the curtains when it’s hot out...

11
TOWER FAN 1:
...while they incessantly bang on about normally hot countries which this country is now temporarily a bit hotter than.

12
[The loft hatch opens and a person comes up the ladder]
PERSON:
APPARENTLY IT’S HOTTER THAN GREECE, LISA

I just took part in The National Conversation to share my views on what it's really like living in our area right now. It's a major UK-wide project by researchers at Oxford University, and it only takes a few minutes. You should have your say too! www.national-conversation.ox.ac.uk

One city. 9 million people. All of us Londoners. We will never be divided.
White text on a black background reads “Hate is loud.” at the top and “Love is louder.” at the bottom, with the Mayor of London logo centred between the two lines.

"Among young American men, the strongest predictor of support for the tradwife lifestyle was not gallantry but hostility towards women" Apparently this is not what researchers "expected". Which makes one wonder: had these researchers thought about it for 30 seconds? www.thetimes.com/life-style/s...

Tradwife movement ‘attracts men who are hostile to women’
The strongest predictor of support for women staying at home and deferring to their husband is not, as researchers expected, chivalry but ‘hostile sexism’

Despite the negativity from those seeking to talk down London for political gain, London is thriving, and here’s the proof: we’ve just been awarded the highly prestigious Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize.

Striking chart on the gender skew among AI researchers. In academia, the number of top AI scientists who are women has been growing slowly. In the private sector? Not so much. (chart from this vg paper from Uni of Chicago bfi.uchicago.edu/working-pape...)

Your regular reminder that the UK is in fact a high trust society and anyone who implies it isn’t is either selling you a pup or has bought one.

In times of increasing division, it’s important that all Londoners know they are valued and welcome in our city. With the National Lottery Community Fund, we’re creating a new network of community spaces across the capital. Find your nearest one: www.london.gov.uk/programmes-s...
A bright pink and yellow graphic titled “Loved & Wanted: Community Spaces Across London.” It shows a simplified map of London with numbered location markers and a list of 30 community spaces grouped by region—Central, East, North, South, and West. Each region includes the names of local community centres and hubs corresponding to the map numbers. A banner at the bottom reads “Find a community space near you: london.gov.uk/lovedandwantedhere” alongside the message “You are loved & wanted.”

Child at the podium: “A woo woo woo.” Mamdani: That’s how I felt when we came up with this plan. Together, we will expand the idea of what is possible in our city—and what sounds and noises we can make at a press conference.

I imagine a lot more would get done if leadership at #COP29 looked like this.
