This is meant to be a provocation, but it show a major generational shift in the German far right - during the Cold War, the far right followed the expellee lobby and talked about 1937 borders (i.e reclaiming East Prussia and Silesia from the USSR and Poland but pre Anschluss of Austria)

A two panel meme of the Simpsons. The top panel has kirk van houten gesturing to a race care bed. The text reads "im an AI guy. How many local models do YOU run?" The bottom panel is homer with a pope hat photoshopped onto his head. The bottom text reads "I run the catholic church."

A feature of post-war German democracy has been that the left has traditionally had far more of a firewall to the far left than the center right has had with the far right. The central role of anti-communism in Cold War West Germany created a structural asymmetry that has not been reckoned with.

The campaign against the creation of a Linke led govt in Berlin is focused almost entirely on accusations of antisemitism and the specter of Neukölln. This is very different from the protests against the formation of the first Linke led govt in Thüringen in 2014 which were all about the GDR.

Weidel's latest press conference reinforces my hunch that the next decade of German politics might be defined by how the AfD expanding at the expense of the CDU/CSU Right might so freak out Centrist and mobilise Leftist voters that it increases the likelihood of far more Left-leaning governments

The CDU/CSU has never been absent from a federal or state parliament in the Federal Republic of Germany since 1949. This is a massive blow to the party that see itself as the natural governing party of post war Germany.

I actually don't think this is necessarily purely marketing, there is an ideology behind that and it fits well with EA and longtermism. It's a very stupid ideology though that ignores any actual consequences of their actions in the real world while being obsessed with extrapolating into the future.

The easy answer to this is that we actually know about the dangers that the whole AI complex poses right now and they have nothing to do with their weirdly giddy "warnings" about the coming apocalypse.

There is also something amusing in how AI oligarchs think hiring philosophers will help them anticipate future risks in searching for the machine gods when so many escalating risks that might take them down are lurking in more mundane spheres of everyday politics and economics

When looking at the stuff turned out by AI researchers right now you get a really good sense of the risks that build up when scientists aren't forced to work in the same building as people who study history, culture, politics, economics and war.

I'll take warnings about imminent AI apocalypse from AI researchers seriously if they worked to shut such a supposedly dangerous sector down. Otherwise I'd worry more about how this discourse distracts from more mundane ways distortions through AI will crash financial markets

Counter-mobilisation against AfD success in Sachsen Anhalt could lead the CDU to lose centrist voters to Greens or SPD in Berlin and McPom as confidence in Merz plummets. That means leftish SPD-Linke-Green government in Berlin and McPom, AfD near dominant in SA, and the CDU ground down in between

My main two general takeaways as a GDR historian on this election (which will probably be painfully familiar to anyone who has followed me for a while) 1. Equating the AfD with a residual mass authoritarian personality is an oversimplification that obscures effects of post-89 social collapse...

The landslide victory for a far-right party marks a profound turning point. The traditional party system is no longer able to bind people to it or absorb the prevailing public mood. The AfD is winning support with ethnonationalist and chauvinistic positions that exclude large sections of society.

Too many people are making assumptions about the discipline and stability of the BSW, never mind the AfD or CDU. Sachsen Anhalt is more likely to slide into chaotic political paralysis.

Most likely scenario that ZDF and ARD debates aren't really grappling with is that no party in Sachsen Anhalt is able to get a stable governing majority and the Land becomes effectively ungovernable
