Writer. White-knuckle knitter. Bereaved bunny mom. Superannuated Pre-Raphaelite stunner. Punk- and Goth-adjacent. My novel, Damned Pretty Things, and my related novella, The Circus, the Garden (and Mario Lanza), are out from Aqueduct Press. I like perfume.

One of today's Photos memories. A newspaper clipping I held onto because everyone in the office where I worked was convinced this was a photo of me. (It wasn't.) Text in ALT, though some of it has been cut off....

Harsh lights and velvety darks chronicle lives of outcasts

By Regina Hackett

P. Art Critic

St. Theresa of Avila once dreamed of souls floating downward into hell, like leaves shaken off the limb of a massive tree in a fall wind.

Gerard Albanese photographs men and women who have lost their comfortable place in society or never had it, and who drift ever downward into deepening poverty. Cliches spring to mind nd when one thinks of the subject of the impoverished for a photographic essay, but there are no cliches in Albanese's work, now on view at the Traver/Sutton Gallery.

The poor, the old and the eccentric move through the blinding lights and velvety darks of his painterly compositions with a full human measure.

Albanese, now in his mid-40s, was a landscape architect working out of Lawrence Halprin's New York office, bored with his job, when he saw Diane Arbus' photo of two small twin girls, "really saw it," he said, "broke the code of the photograph" and realized it had the substantive weight of a great painting.

He took a workshop with Arbus early in 1971, half a year prior to her death, and later ter studied with Arbus' teacher, Lisette Model. Working for nearly a decade in Seattle, he has now emerged as a strong personal voice within their tradition, finding what Arbus called the universal theme in the specific thing photographed. Like her, Albanese has his own sense of what a fact is, and like her he loves what you can't see in a photograph, the actual darkness.

Albanese never manipulates his work, doesn't burn or dodge the print to obscure a detail or lighten a dark. Using an old Leica camera with a 35 mm lens, he photographs only on sunny days, as Seattle grays are too soft for his purposes. His exposure times are in effect his brush stroke, his

Soooooooooooo many years ago, three of my short stories appeared in Asimov's, and I was absolutely over the moon. What's happening now makes me so sad and so angry. Having a story accepted by these magazines should be an unalloyed joy.

Jesus, she couldn't afford to get better work than *that*? I know a woman, 10 years older than me, who got work done and she looks like a perfect little gamine. (Of course, she was lovely before she got work done, too.) Anyway, I guess there's a "look as evil as you are" school of plastic surgery.
