The instructors are often volunteers but are supposed to have background checks and training, and they should be able and willing to talk about that in more detail.

We absolutely need this as public policy but if you want it for your kids and the schools aren’t doing it: check if local progressive churches offer the OWL program. It’s usually done as a public service, not religious programming as such, by UU and UCC congregations. Also some UMC, I think.
