I'm told I might appreciate having played Paratopic *before* I play all the way through Roman Sands, so a quick detour to that, after catching up on a few Thinky Dailies. twitch.tv/clockworknet...
Cartoon Annette playing video games. Pictured are Paratopic, a greenish retro-looking 3D horror game; and Thinky Dailies, a cartoony puzzle game with cartoon cyclops.

Theatrical poster for "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me," except the portrait of Laura Palmer is replaced with a Walkling from the game Big Walk, and the film name is replaced with "Big Walk with Me"

Pretty sure this is just storytelling, not a specific reference. But oh gosh isn't Lego Alec's curl of hair so cute?
A Lego Alec (with a reaaaaally cute curl of hair) sits on the floor and assembles a tiiiiny Lego Jerry. In the background is a large Lego "Jerry" nameplate, as we're actually looking at the surface of Jerry's desk.

I think this part might be a Pi reference. He's frantically doing equations on a notepad while energetic drum and bass music plays.
Alec scribbling furiously on a notepad while holding a Lego Jerry in one hand. He is focused intently. A larger Lego Jerry lies face-down in the table in front of him.

Alec attempts to speak to the camera, but only guitar noises come out of his mouth. Feels kinda Twilight Zone? Not sure if just surreal or a specific reference.
Alec in his workshop, holding a Jerry in one hand, leaning towards the camera to speak. In the background we can see some of his previous models, including a swarm of butterflies and a guitar. His desk is cluttered with packaging and storage for a model in construction.

I don't think the pole-vaulter is a reference, just a cool model. There's an Office Space reference in the background that was introduced in a previous video.
A Lego office-worker pole-vaulting with a large Lego ballpoint pen, flexing as he plants it in the ground. In the background another figure flies through the air with a baseball bat, assaulting a printer.

Master Model Builder Alec introduces himself as Alexander, president and CEO of General Jerry Dynamics. Has a touch of Cave Johnson, a sort of 50s "we had the boys in the lab whip something up" kind of vibe.
Alec (not made out of Lego this time) stands in a featureless concrete corridor wearing a white lab coat over a grey shirt and black tie. He's gesturing towards the on-screen overlay, which says "General Jerry Dynamics".

This one is introduced as "the mother Jerry". What's the black and white portrait here?
A normal-looking Lego office-worker oversees everything from a raised vantage point, lit by ominous green light. At his feet is a black (grey? dark green?) and white abtract Lego painting of a face. It has a dark red quarter-circle in each corner to make a nice frame.

A reference to The Thing? A transporter accident?
A horrific amalgam of two Lego office workers. It scuttles along the floor like a spider, limbs splayed in all directions, a second head erupting from its back, a phone clip for a face.

Annette @weeble.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
One is trying to write "help mot..." while another erases it. Not really sure what the message was supposed to be?
A Lego figure strides across a piece of paper with a large Lego pencil, erasing the word "help" that was written there.A Lego office worker leans on a giant Lego pencil to write on the paper. It seems to have written "mot" in cursive.

Here the Jerries are constructing (or dismantling?) a clone.
Two Lego office workers assemble a third. They all have the same colour scheme: a muted jade-green shirt, light brown trousers and a black belt with a grey phone clip. They all have short brown hair with male-pattern baldness.

Annette @weeble.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
The phone-clip monolith has to be a 2001: A Space Odyssey reference. Skeleton minifig is a cute stand-in for the animal bone.
In the foreground of this chaotic scene, an office worker swings a skeleton minifig (about a quarter of his height) at a huge grey oblong slab. Another Lego office worker sits on the ground holding his hands to his ears to block out the incessant and pervasive drone.

Sacrifice of office equipment to the giant Jerry... The giant Jerry I think is from a previous prank on Jerry. Generic cultist thing or a specific reference?
Little Lego office workers kneel while a black-robed figure sets fire to a paper shredder with a flaming pencil, overseen by an enormous Lego office worker in an office chair.

She is a terror.
A green-haired white rabbit-child with a riotous grin leaps through the air, hurling shiny black cartoon bombs in all directions. She wear a green dress, bright orange and white sneakers and a butterfly-shaped orange bow in her hair. A black and blue cat-blob creature runs in panic. Lo-fi pixel art.

I'm gonna play this strange game to see what it's all about. And because my girlfriend has been playing it. I have read the description and still have no idea what it is. After some Thinky Dailies. twitch.tv/clockworknet...
Annette playing Roman Sands. It's got a very vaporwave colour-scheme, all cyan and magenta. An anime-girl is lit in cold pink light, grinning strangely. She wears some kind of resort polo shirt. Purple tubing coils behind her as if a snake. Behind her some deck-chairs overlook the ocean. The Thinky Dailies logo is also overlaid in the corner.

I'm not sure I'd draw any distinction either... I guess a "report" *could* be a bit longer? Maybe "essay" suggests you're going to make an argument while "report" sounds more like you're going to give an account of things that happened?

I would have liked to get to write more essays. I think i had to write maybe three essays the entire time. I vaguely remember someone, maybe John O'Donnell (teaching Functional Programming? unsure) bemoaning how bad comp-sci students were at writing essays and giving us one just so we had practice.

I got no choices in my first or second year of uni. My degree required me to take a fixed set of computing, maths and electronics modules. Although I eventually struggled so much with engineering electromagnets that I switched from Electronic & Software Engineering to just Software Engineering.

I'm reading this and thinking....
A teen boy with short light brown hair says "Wait, you guys are getting a choice of subjects?" with "a choice of subjects" crudely edited into place. It's an edit of a scene and popular meme where he originally says "Wait, you guys are getting paid?"

Why were Dime bars banished from supermarkets? I feel like you only ever see their ground up corpses fed to Dairy Milk bars in supermarkets. But they are not truly dead. They still dwell in newsagents and corner stores in some kind of undeath.

some photos about movement and time
sunlight on a wall, broken plaster and peeling paint. exposed sandstone brought to the surface, picked out in relief with layers of plaster falling away. there's a "warning: 24hr cctv" sign to the side; it isn't relevant for us. we're focused on the warm afternoon light, the various earthy colours of old paint, the decay and the neglect. all of which are beautiful, if you stop and look at the contrast in textures. the light is moving slowly here, that we think of it as unchanging. and so it is with crumbling stone.

I gathered lots of useful data. Like "tell players they do not need to break and enter, or climb anything". Also "do not take photographs in an area that may induce players to breach section 41 of the Criminal Justice Act 1925".

Hit me up if you are in Glasgow city centre today and want to test this. I didn't get enough people for it to really be a competition but I can give you a clue sheet and you can tell me how you find it.

Get in touch if you want to join in tomorrow. I think I only have two or three folk confirmed and I have made up eight laminated clue sheets, so I can still slot you in. Running it from 10.30am to 4pm, but you can start later or finish earlier if you need to.

My goals here are to do some calibration for how long it takes people to find stuff, what the logistics are like, and how the obscurity/obviousness of a photo affects how fun it is. The competition isn't really the main focus, and if we only have a small handful we might just do it entire co-op.

Do I have any Glasgow friends free on Saturday who want to try out a photo scavenger hunt around the city centre? It's a bit rough and I have probably miscalibrated the difficulty. I have not done a thing like this before and this is kind of a playtest.
Game Rules
Objective
The object of the game is, as part of a team, to find and replicate photographs which were taken around Glasgow, in a limited space of time.
Play zone
The play zone is a quadrilateral drawn between the center of George Square, the midpoint in the river between the South Portland Street Suspension Bridge and the Victoria Bridge, the Tidal Weir at Glasgow Green, and High Street train station, marked in red and labelled with a bird. (An image illustrates this. The red silhouette of a small perching bird marks the middle of the region.)
Goal photographs
Each player will receive the same sheet of 36 photographs at the start of the day. All the photographs were taken somewhere in the play zone.(The goal photographs paragraph is illustrated with an example sheet. A six by six grid of square photos uses the letters G through L and 7 through 12. It is marked prominently with the text "EXAMPLE".)
Teams
Players may form teams of any size.
Mascots
Every team will be given a soft toy as a mascot. You may bring your own. Your team may only have one mascot. Mascots will receive participation ribbons.
Taking photographs
You must try to recreate as many of the goal photographs as you can, with your team mascot in frame, wearing its ribbon. You must match the framing of the photographs, including the same major background or foreground elements, such as buildings, statues or street signs. Your mascot does not need to be in focus.
Navigation and exploration
You may use Google Maps or an equivalent service for search and navigation. You may not click into the "photos" tab or scroll to view photos beyond those that first appear on screen when viewing a search result.
You may not use Street View or any equivalent service.A map of Glasgow city centre from OpenStreetMap. It has been overlaid with four coloured quadrants: yellow with a bell centred around Sauchiehall Street, green with a tree around the Strathclyde and City College campuses, red with a bird around the merchant city, and blue with a fish around central station.

I *think* the integers have the LUBP? And the rationals *do not*. Any "slice" of them is kinda porous in a way... The reals have the LUBP, but many subsets don't. I *think* [0,1]∪[2,3] has it, [0,1)∪(2,3] does not have it, and [0,1]∪(2,3] has it?
110
Annette @weeble.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I have (from places other than my textbook) gleaned that this is important because it tells us something about whether a continuum is, kinda, whole or not?
110
Annette @weeble.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
But the LUBP is a property of an ordered set, right? It says that any subset with an UB in the set has a LUB... and some ordered sets have this and others don't. And that's kinda where I'm struggling. Sets can be all sorts of shapes!
110
Annette @weeble.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I think it's kind like... there are no infinite crevasses in this continuum. There's always a nice safety rail to fall onto. And, like, the rationals are full of such crevasses! Every irrational is, like, this infinite crevasse you can fall down from either side and there's no hard stop.
