Outlander is held back by flat writing, drab Hollywood medieval costume design. Jim Caviezel is not nearly a good enough actor to elevate a dull main character. The creature itself is pretty good, and has a great introduction.

#Smaugust One of my personal favorites of mine, my basilisk. They only live in the very driest deserts, as water washes away the poisonous oils in their feathery coat. Meeting their gaze brings death, though at the cost of the creature being effectively blind.

Another dragon! Amphiceras has two heads, with the front head being in charge of moving the body, but being significantly less intelligent. The more clever tail can only attempt to guide its more foolish partner through manipulation, intimidation, or even kindness.

A squat, lizardy creature, with a head on each end of its body. Its front head faces away and is much smaller, a simple blue nub with no special features. The head on its tail is closer, with a gaping predatory maw displaying four pairs of horns. Its squinted eye gives it the impression of a mischievous smile. The tail is pink, in contrast to the green of most of the body. Blue, kidney-shaped plates stick up from the creature's hunched back, largest in the middle and becoming smaller towards the neck and tail.

I've barely drawn in a long time, but in honor of #Smaugust, I'll post some old dragon art. First up is not the most straightforward, just one I think is neat: the petricarn, the result of a dragon not properly dying and becoming angry liquid chaos making bony bodies for itself out of dragon bits.

A colorful mass of dinosaur-like bones arranged in a vaguely humanoid fashion. The creature stands on a leg, an arm with oversized fingers, and its tail. Its head is two crania facing one another, pointed straight upwards. The entire creature is covered with a web of black goo, dripping off some of its parts.

A much more jumbled mass of bones than the first form, this petricarn has a massive Torosaurus-like skull for a torso. It is supported by two regular legs and one massive leg bone ending in a stack of vertebrae. A scorpion-like tail made of vertebrae and leg bones extends from the back of the torso and loops overhead, ending in a massive claw. The same black fluid as before drips from the skull's openings.

This petricarn has degenerated into little more than a pile of black slime, still decoared with colorful bones. It has formed four "heads" from bones. One head has longbones jutting from the neck like steps of a ladder and a simple skull, elongated with saw-tooth projections on the bottom instead of teeth and two horns. The second head is more of a hand, two clawed fingers and an opposable claw. The third head has a collar of rectangular bones and is composed of three tendrils of ooze that are tipped with and sport down their length colorful claws and teeth. The fourth head has armoring similar to an armored fish like Dunkleosteous.

The angels now usually (and incorrectly) labeled as cherubs were originally called putto. In later examples they took the form you'd expect from the standard Cupid knockoff type. They had pudgy baby bodies with wings. But several early ones dropped the body entirely, and well...
