Even tho Creature Commandos rocked, Peacemaker is a giant hit, Superman rocked and was a hit, and Lanterns rocks and is a hit. And by all accounts it seems like Clayface didn't get fucked up like Supergirl did but we'll see.

Had they made a movie this weak AFTER some of the stuff that's clearly more important to the universe like the Grodd show and MoT and Wonder Woman and Lanterns, then it'd be less annoying. Because now its just ammunition for the trolls to act like Gunn is fucking up.

I've read John Byrne's Genesis. I lived through DCYou. Like... The movie doesn't infuriate or offend me. I just don't get some of the decisions. At least it set Milly up as this character and I have nothing but faith in James to give her an actual good movie to be in with Man of Tomorrow.

Like I don't hate the movie by any stretch. I've been through all the bad times as a DC fan. Believe me this even with it's problems doesn't fool a fly on me as much as like BvS or Squad 2016 or Black Adam or WW84 or Green Lantern 2011 or Titans or the bad seasons of Smallville or Superman 3 and 4

Instead it's just Fury Road but sucky. Where you miss the main part that made the liberation of those wives in Fury Road work was because they were all fully fleshed out characters as opposed to just generic victims.

So to take just the premise but condense it into 2 hours and change almost everything else about it, it's like why adapt it? It should've been an 8-10 episode mini series. Then you'd have the room to tell all the nuances and incidents that happen in the story and make it hit so hard.

Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Maus would be one but thank god no one will ever attempt to adapt that. And a lot of Tom King's comics, but especially Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow because of what it has to say about like womanhood and because of Bilquis Evely's art style, is one of those books to me.

But also - there are certain comics where they're so good, so complete as narrative pieces of art, and tower so tall that it feels like unless you go COMPLETELY off book or just do a sequel than you may as well not even bother. Watchmen is one of those. Hence why I hate the ending to that movie

Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I don't understand why they didn't do a lot from the book. And I WANT things to be different. I support artistic liberties with these movies. What they've changed for Superman and Lanterns from the comics, I adore. But what this changes just felt arbitrary and wasn't good enough to justify itself

Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Write her speech to Ruthye just slightly differently, and it'd work. Or do the ending to the comic. And don't tell me that wouldn't have worked continuity wise. Look at Lanterns. No one cares how much that time jumps.

Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
The end doesn't work. And it's not a case of me Ree-ing at a DC hero killing like I did with Man of Steel. Unlike Man of Steel I get the intent and how it's supposed to thematically fit in to the rest of the movie and I have faith on it mattering in future movies but the scene itself is just bad.

Mr. Sunday and Maso made a good point in their review that there's barely any like memorable action or triumph moments FOR Supergirl in the costume. Like there's a lot of action but none of it's memorable. Again, what Superman got right.

Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
That cover of The Middle isn't as bad as I thought it was the first time but it still doesn't fit. Just use score. The big display of power from the third act of Superman didn't need a stupid song. It was all score.

Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
And then when Gunn and Safran realized it didn't work they tried to re-cut it with Gunn's style and it just came out feeling like a bleh of a movie.

I can't speak to what Nogueria's first draft looked like. Maybe it WAS great like Gunn said. But it's clear through shaping it through pre production and them forcing Lobo into the script and ESPECIALLY getting that hack Gillespie on board to shape and execute it something got lost.

The 1st act works for the most part. I love the flashbacks. Theres a lot of great thematic ideas in there (not exactly what the book was about but still for what this is I like the emotional & moral undercurrents) All the actors (except Krem's) make the material work better than it does on the page

Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I like Momoa as Lobo but like that character doesn't need to be in the movie.

Krem sucks. The needle drops all suck. The action is so generic.

God Supergirl does not work. Its so close to being there but it just isn't

I think just for box office reasons they're gonna market this AS episode x.

Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Let's also not forget that as a writer at least for Star Wars his track record ain't bad. All his Rebels episodes were solid and that also proves that he and Filoni collaborate well together.

Again I feel like I'm always apologizing for spam replies to you lmao but idk man I don't agree at all with a lot of the takes I saw and glad you shared a level headed take. I didn't necessarily want it to go past 9 personally, but the saga continues and it's a filmmaker I love doing it so I'm hyped

Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I also saw people being like "it's gonna get canceled like all the rest" and I highly doubt that because of how high profile & already trusted Watts is, because of the Episode numbering, the amount of time Kinberg's been tinkering away, and the fact that the NJO movie disappeared (unfortunately).

Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Lotta doom and gloom on other sites and yes it would've been nice to have it not be a straight white man doing it, yes it would be nice if we could put the episode numbers to bed, but it's happening and if it were anyone BUT Watts and Filoni I'd be negative but I'm way on board.

Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I'm totally fucking on board tbh. I feel like I've been defending Watts since Homecoming. Skeleton Crew was amazing and so true to the heart of SW. I get why Dave and Lynwen picked him.

Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Obligatory apologies for the multi thread reply this is just a topic that really excites me and has always been a part of SW that draws my curiosity just as a nerd about restorations & different cuts and shit. I like there being endless versions of movies lmao! Thats why I like those boutique labels

Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Always thought he shoulda done it like Blade Runner & had multiple cuts on the same set so I'm just glad people will have the option & hey I've never had a chance to see the originals in theaters in ANY form (missed all those 40th screenings) so it's gonna be real special just on a personal level
100
Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
And I'm not wholly anti special editions. Some changes I love, some I hate, and I always supported George's right to tinker but I never agreed with his decision to bury the "original" (I know the true original has never been on home video but you get what I mean).
100
Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Or maybe those will all be there just blown up which yeah on a technicality level isn't what people are selling it as but who cares I'm just glad it's happening
100
Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
It wouldn't surprise me if they just do fixes to the effects like the Vaseline thing or seeing through the cockpit in Empire (which even the despecialized's didnt fix).
100
Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
IIRC the original negatives WERE cleaned up at least somewhat to do the special editions in the first place so I'd imagine this is just piggybacking off that but also optimizing it for imax and newer TVs.
100
Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
I mean theres been leaks about what they've been doing to clean up all 3 movies for a while & it's typical restoration stuff like what shout factory or some botique label does to a film but on a mass scale. I dont think anyone sensible is expecting anything more or less but who knows w/ this fanbase

The reason why people think Dolly was “politically neutral” is because they don’t understand being political as a series of actions born of commitment to an idea. Being political as defined by the pundit class is to be in front of a microphone delivering sound bytes, it’s something to be devoured

He felt like the person in the Jenkins run again. Like the person in the DeMatteis run again. The person in the Stern run. The late 60s/early 70s person again. He was allowed to grow up again in the 616 for the briefest moment and they ruined it with Paul and Rek-Rap and all that bullshit.

And it goes into his morality, his sense of responsibility. It's not a perfect run especially since Marvel obviously didn't let him end it the way he wanted to but it was a genuine swing at getting back to the character as he was before OMD. He felt like the person from the JMS run again.

That first arc is literally almost fourth wall breaking. It's talking about his lack of maturity and things missing. It's more than just putting him back with MJ the writing brings a sense of emotional maturity back to him while still keeping that quip machine mascot stuff Slott had established

It's so fucked up that the fandom fucking ignored Nick Spencer's Amazing Spider-Man run because it was such a full hearted attempt to reconcile all the character growth he had gone through during the marriage era and the like man child regression he had gone through post-OMD.

We can choose who we want to be. We can live the life we imagine. This is the lesson. That name doesn't belong to the blood line only it's become a symbol. An aspiration. Rey taking this name is a pledge for the future. Kids get it. Most of us get it. Haters kind of want to hate it. And so it is. 💙

But this truthfully all comes from this place of wanting it to be cool and fucked up all the time like the third act of Empire and never have fun.

It's why you fuckers love putting it on an imaginary pedestal so much and not realizing it IS just a movie (even though it does mean all these other things), because once something is up on a pedestal then you can be a drama queen about tearing it down. And fuck that shit. Always.

The first thing we did with Star Wars is try to ruin it for the kids it's for. And that hasn't stopped, to this day. And the Fandom is complicit in it.

Mason Harris @weaponizedfunk.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
Star Wars, even in it's darkest moments, even post-Disney ultra brandification (that always existed btw), when it comes to the in universe material has always worn it's heart on it's sleeve. And there's a lot of people so fucked up that they need to tear that down.

The same part of film watching culture that made a meme out of that beautiful line about grief from WandaVision - people who are so fucking cynical that anything that dares wear it's heart on it's sleeve is deemed bad and less than.

And that goes deeper than fan expectations based on misread plot points, the haters from day one shit is, frankly, a part of humanity that is sick. A part of humanity and film watching culture that persists to this day.
