Whenever I visit the National Portrait Gallery, I always have to spend a little time with this portrait of the poet and satirist Alexander Pope painted by Jonathan Richardson in 1737. The economy of mark making, and psychological intensity of the face make the portrait feel surprisingly modern.

“Avedon was at war with the cliches of portraiture, including the cliches of ageing, and anything that seemed either merely pious or too picturesque offended him. Contradiction was the engine of his art.” (Toni Morrison, writer, New York, 10 September 2003). www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...

I’ve long admired the pioneering Scottish photographer John Thomson (1837–1921), so it was a real treat to pause at lunchtime and catch Deborah Ireland’s engaging talk at the @bodleian.ox.ac.uk. John Thomson: Through Siam, Cambodia and China with a Camera.
A historical black-and-white photograph of two young Chinese girls. The older girl stands wearing a woven conical hat and loose traditional clothing, gazing directly at the camera, while the younger girl looks up at her, holding her arm. The glass plate negative is scratched and damaged, with areas of fading and light leaks visible. (Canton, Kwangtung province, China. John Thomson, 1869. Wellcome Collection. Long admired Joe Caroff’s (1921-2025) cover design for Norman Mailer’s “The Naked and the Dead. www.nytimes.com/2025/08/17/o...
Alt text:

“First edition book cover of The Naked and the Dead by Norman Mailer. The design features a black background with a red square on the left containing an abstract line drawing of a face. The title is printed in bold white and gray text, ‘the NAKED and the DEAD,’ with ‘a novel’ in red script below. The author’s name, Norman Mailer, appears in white and red to the right of the drawing. The cover shows signs of wear along the edges.”

Had an excellent conversation with @marcwilson.co.uk yesterday about his forthcoming book, The Edge of Ruin. This morning, I am working on the signature mapping and image sequence. There are still a couple of hours left if you would like to back Marc's project. www.kickstarter.com/projects/107...

A lecture date for the diary… Photographers Pam Isherwood and Maggie Murray are discussing Format: the Women’s Photography Agency, founded in 1983. (© Pam Isherwood, Stop Clause 28 March, Whitehall, London, 9 January 1988) www.nationalgalleries.org/event/resist...
Black and white photo of a protest scene. In the foreground, two young men kiss while holding a sign that reads: “YOUNG, IN LOVE, AND ANGRY.” Both wear jackets and badges, and the mood is intimate and defiant. Behind them, other demonstrators are visible, one woman mid-chant. The image conveys themes of LGBTQ+ love, activism, and protest.

Looking forward to July and seeing Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes. www.hiddenmasterfilm.com
Poster for the documentary Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes. The background features a black-and-white photograph of two nude male figures—one in light and one in shadow—posing closely. The title “HIDDEN MASTER” is overlaid in large, elegant pink serif letters, partially obscuring the figures. At the top, text reads: “OUTSTANDING DOCUMENTARY NOMINEE — GLAAD MEDIA AWARDS” and a quote: “A loving profile of a remarkable, nearly forgotten artist” — Bay Times. Below the title, it reads: “The Legacy of George Platt Lynes. A film by Sam Shahid.” The bottom text states: “In cinemas 11 July.”

A gorgeous morning for a winter bird survey, establishing a baseline for a private estate that is putting nature first. 49 species recorded. And building on the work I’ve done over the last two years with butterfly, bee and odonata surveys on the estate.
