If he started with a greyhound-type dog, and was told wolves had thicker muzzles, bigger paws, scarier teeth, and more fur, I can kinda see how he got there.

Didn't know they made custom sleep earplugs! If I wasn't convinced I'd loose them in a week, I'd consider that even at $152. (I usually end up removing my ear plugs during night because they are uncomfortable.)

Painless if the person isn't panicking, is my understanding. And it still allows us to pretend we are being humane, which is a serious problem.

Yeah, I forgot the drugs have to be compounded locally, which could also make a huge difference. Shouldn't, but even with drugs that are compounded regularly, you frequently hear about quality control issues.

This one was only half of the same drugs. With pets, they are put under deep anesthesia, then pentobarbital is administered. In Tennessee, it was just pentobarbital. Big difference is the skill in putting in the IV line, plus that vets will stop and reevaluate if the anesthesia isn't working.

While he was campaigning for governor, I think Bill Richardson said that he'd keep the death penalty...then, once elected, signed the bill abolishing it in New Mexico. That would be ~2006-2009. But that was during a debate or interview, not something that he actively campaigned on.

NEW: Tohono O'odham Nation leadership issued a release announcing that they’ve filed an emergency injunction after been informed by CBP that “it intends to remove thousands of Saguaros and other vegetation,” on sovereign tribal lands. The destruction is set to begin on Indigenous Peoples Day.

BORDER WALL CONTRACTORS TO START REMOVING SACRED SAGUAROS ON

MONDAY, OCTOBER 12

Nation Files Emergency Injunction with the Circuit Court of Appeals

SELLS, Ariz. - The Tohono O'odham Nation has been informed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that it intends to remove thousands of Saguaros and other vegetation in its misguided efforts to construct a border wall. On Monday, Oct. 12, federal contractors will begin ripping out these protected plants that have lived in the Sonoran Desert for thousands of years. The fact that this desecration will take place on Indigenous Peoples' Day is disrespectful to all tribal nations.

In addition, earlier this week the Tohono O'odham Nation filed an emergency injunction with the Washington, D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals to stop DHS from removing thousands of sacred saguaros on Tohono O'odham land. Nation leadership is demanding that the courts put a stop to this lawless behavior that has already caused irreparable damage to our environment and cultural heritage, all in the name of constructing a costly and ineffective border wall. Known as ha:sañ, saguaros are symbols of the Tohono O'odham shared faith, serving as spiritual monuments to customs and values. The removal of any saguaro is an act of atrocity, as they are considered people by the Tohono O'odham."Trespassing on our land to remove the sacred saguaros is like having masked men break into your house and take away your children," said Tohono O'odham Nation Chairman Verlon Jose. "The ha:șañ are our family, as much a part of us as any blood relative. To destroy them by the thousands carves a wound in our hearts that will not heal. We call on all people for solidarity as we work to protect our culture and our land from this useless, destructive wall."

The mighty saguaro not only stands as an O'odham and American icon, it is also a critical part of our ecosystem, providing shelter, sustenance, and deep cultural significance. The saguaro, in Tohono O'odham custom, is akin to a person and any malicious action against one is as if harm is being done to our people. This belief is memorialized in Resolution 21-137 by the Tohono O'odham Legislative Council.

"This is a violation of our sovereignty, of our religious liberty, and of our land," said Chairman Jose. "The Nation will continue to fight to prevent this senseless devastation from going forward and we are grateful for the overwhelming community support we have received."

Ivan Turgenev's "Execution of Troppmann" is a short essay, published in 1870, that gives a first-hand account of the writer attending a public execution in Paris. Turgenev's details how the drunk, unruly crowd turned a somber moment into a carnival. A deeply moving essay; I encourage you to read it.

The expected value of a dictatorship is lower than the expected value of a democracy, even if the theoretical maximum value of a dictatorship is higher than the theoretical maximum value of a democracy. (Also, we can work to raise the value of a democracy, and that is hard to do with dictatorship.)

I mean that literally it has been shown that the historic English village pastures, that Hardin claimed were overgrazed when he wrote the Tragedy of the Commons, were not actually overgrazed.

I have no idea what the brand was, it was from a futon store in Ft. Collins; we went in and asked for something durable, and they suggested this oak futon frame. I have replaced the futon twice, but that's negligible.

I think I'd take Liberty Biberty over the constant GolfNow ads that I currently see. At one point I was getting constant Toyota ads (the family ones in Spanish), and they were cute.

The theory of the tragedy of the commons? It has been shown to be more narrow & complex than originally thought, but it still happens when there is no way to sanction people/firms (socially, financially, or legally) for abuse of the commons. The ur example, however, has been debunked.

"Selects Premium Fountain Pens" Apparently Amazon is counting Asvine as "premium". 🤷 "Favors mystery fiction by specific authors" My mom decided to reread all of Hillerman's books, and for some reason that counts for more than all the fantasy and history books I've purchased over the years.

i'm actually going to take this goofy post somewhat seriously: much as going to the gym requires discipline, so too does going to the mental gym require discipline. and discipline is harder than it looks: it is about *your* ability to discipline *yourself*

I don't wear jewelry, but these always look so interesting! And the best part is there is always a story about where the different components/stones/beads come from- you can see each piece is made with love. And there's something significant about each one of them.

This. Alternatively, allow crowd-funding to make articles public. $5 buys so many views, and once a set amount has been raised, the article becomes permanently public.

Yeah, I'm against executions, but I think firing squads strike a better balance between "no plausible way to pretend this is humane" and "not easily turned into entertainment, the way the beheadings or hangings sometimes were" than anything else currently available.

Seriously. I'm sure the information is there, somewhere, but figuring out where is a nightmare. And I would rate my insurer as pretty good in this area; finding information for my mom's plan is much worse. And then you still have to verify, because documents and databases don't get updated quickly.

I am for cognitive offloading because it allows my mind to focus on more important and/or more interesting things. I do worry some people might not replace the cognitive load, but people not thinking has been a problem since forever, so...🤷. Maybe we should run psa's about the benefits of puzzles?

Also, McDonald's and other fast food restaurants are saying they are seeing a decrease in low-income customers; the increase shown in the chart is likely coming from non-fast food restaurants. foodinstitute.com/focus/qsrs-c...

Hours worked per week is virtually flat over the past decade; if you want to claim the people think the economy is bad because they are more tired, you need to provide an explanation for the increased tiredness.

My goto, actual cooking dinner (as opposed to a microwave meal) takes about 20min, start to finish. If someone goes right past McDonald's on their way home, that might be faster, but not by much. Now if they are tired and don't want to cook, that fine, but it is also a different conversation.

Or you never buy the breadcrumbs and cook something else instead. Like I get that it may not be cost-efficient to cook a specific meal once a year at hone, but that doesn't change that cooking at home is cheaper overall.

Now I'm wondering if store brand cheese in Michigan or New York has certifications.
020
Waurii @waurii.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Probably didn't bother because of the cost of certification. Although I can't see it adding much per bag, budget brands seem to avoid anything that adds costs unless a significant number of customers switch to the premium brand over it.

I'd like to see riskier mutual funds and etfs banned, too, but that gets more difficult when there isn't a clear category difference between their investments and a more traditional fund's investments.

Waurii @waurii.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
What 401Ks and IRAs can be invested in also needs more regulation, imo. Crypto should he completely out (including Crypto mutual funds and etfs), as should private equity. Using funds to start a new business should be capped, if not banned, with both a max $ amount and a max % of funds.
