Now I’m getting “data centers pay their own way” propaganda ads on podcasts I'm listening to. 🙄 chloehumbert.substack.com/p/data-cente...
chloehumbert.substack.com
Data centers “paying their own way” is about creating demand for more fossil fuel power plants.
But we know that “pay their own way” just means that they “bring their own power” and that means diesel generators, burning tires, and gas plants right in the neighborhoods.

I'm going to be deleting my bsky acct because this is ridiculous and this platform is down most of the time and I can't load it anyway. I'm still on substack and tumblr and mastodon. And I'm pretty sure the problem is that this bluesky is pro data center and pro ai hype and pro fossil fuel.

Yes the pressure is still needed because this EO is going to do exactly the opposite than the claims - it promotes fossil fuel plants in neighborhoods! that's what "bring their own power" means! bsky.app/profile/wat3...

Here is a list of the things communities have been asking for, that Governor Josh Shapiro's executive order does NOT do, as per @psrpennsylvania.bsky.social www.psrpa.org/post/shapiro...
Many questions are left unanswered and many issues left unsolved. Here is a list of the things communities have been asking for, that this executive order does NOT do.

This executive order:

Does not address gaps in local zoning concerns;

Does not provide local protections on sound, vibration, or light;

Does not clearly address brownfields, superfund sites, decommissioning or cumulative impacts;

Does not require demonstration of net benefits to communities;

Does not eliminate tax breaks to developers;

Does not prohibit “under-the-grid” power such as small nuclear reactors or generators;

Does not prohibit or regulate “temporary” generators;

Does not guarantee that all power generation and related costs be borne by developers;

Does not protect communities from the air and water impacts from gas-fired power plants, even while encouraging more energy buildout;

Does not include specific public participation requirements;

Does not require community benefit agreements.

Does not prohibit Data Centers from becoming a public utility;

Community Benefits Agreements are privatization. They are a way for industry to keep a stranglehold on that community by privatizing these "benefits" and tying them to the corporation's project & lording that over the town. JUST MAKE THE COMPANY PAY TAXES. 💡 chloehumbert.substack.com/p/community-...
diabolical, a most convoluted privatization scheme. Companies benefit from tax breaks or even taxpayer funded grants, for projects in communities that don’t even want the projects, and for development that isn’t necessarily actually useful to society, and just exists for the owners to make money, and then communities are cajoled into taking token gifts by signing agreements that may not even in the end be enforceable. And sometimes the promised gifts may never come to fruition if the company involved goes under or otherwise skips out. And this is all in order to dodge real true accountability.

environmentalists. so convinced of the solastopia vision but in an industry oriented way to where they believe and I hope they're being disabused about this notion, but the idea is that the AI would not just become a god "AGI" & solve all our problems like a lot of the tech tycoons, alt rationalists and other wackadoos claim, but this idea is really just as bonkers and ridiculous - they came to believe that the big AI data center financial bubble would be "good" because it would spur crazy demand for electricity. And even Eric Schmidt said in 2024 that the U.S. doesn't have the capacity to make all the power Sam Altman was saying would be needed. That's with everything! So the demand is enormous. So obviously this doesn't really jibe with climate activism so why would solar proponents think this Is good? Ah ha there is the rub. They see a $$$ boon with this enormous demand! They of course will get their cut on the vig. And they justify the madness with the idea - and itis obviously magical thinking - that there will be all this demand for solar and that will start the solar revolution by reason of the invisible hand of the market which will of course make solar the leading industry, naturally, with a little advocacy of course.

The popularity for audio-video content over text isn't about some "literacy crisis" of the hoi polloi, it's about TIME demands, and people who have to do work that doesn't actually fully engage the mind. Most videos do NOT require you look at the screen they're just 1-5 people sitting & talking!!
