Henrietta Lacks (1920–1951) was an African American woman whose cancer cells, taken without her knowledge or consent, became the first immortal human cell line—known as HeLa cells—and revolutionized medical research worldwide. Born in Virginia, Lacks was treated for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where doctors collected her tumor cells during biopsy.
Unlike normal cells, Henrietta’s cells could survive and multiply indefinitely in the lab, providing an unprecedented tool for scientists. HeLa cells have since been crucial in developing the polio vaccine, cancer treatments, gene mapping, and countless other medical advances.
For decades, Lacks’s contribution went unrecognized, and her family was unaware of her cells’ impact. Her story raised important ethical questions about patient consent and medical research.
