An illustration I made in 2022, the first time I lost my SNAP food stamp benefits. Today, October 1st 2026 marks major changes in the way food stamps are funded, many americans already struggling to eat, myself included, will lose coverage. Millions of americans have already had their benefits taken away.

The two pannel comic features my blue rabbit fursona in a rainbow sweater and blue overalls. The rabbit has rainbow bandages on its arms. Dating ourselves with an "okay, grandma, let's get you back to bed" yelling at clouds post here, but when and (more importantly) WHY did we as a culture decide the best way for a UI to have scrollbars should be for it to pretend it doesn't?

A Windows 95 application window. The scrollbar on the right is big, bulky, and prominent. Modern design sensibilities would call this wasted real estate or UI clutter, especially in an empty document that technically doesn't even need a scrollbar yet because nothing extends far enough down to need to scroll to see it. At least no one could ever doubt it was DEFINITELY THERE, though.

Illustrating a scene both from the novel and from the album's title track, the characters Scout (a mouse) and Girard (a crocodile) engage in a tense standoff, staring each other down with palpable mutual hatred. The characters Rook (a crow), Celine and Jonathan (cats), and Cameron (a collie) watch from the background. By this point, the party have been on a grueling journey and are weighed down by everything from physical exhaustion to emotional baggage and fraying relationships; everyone is struggling. Sparkyopteryx' art captures this beautifully, with even the smaller figures in the distant background still easily able to express and convey visually the strain and heartache everyone has endured by this point.

The characters are drawn with crisp yet monochrome pencils and inks, using hatching techniques to convey the beautiful shading and detail work. The background is a sandy desert type landscape under a darkening sky. In direct contrast to the characters, it is in vibrant color yet soft, almost blurry in the way its colors blend together. If we're remembering correctly, the background was done with markers? Yet stylistically it almost looks like watercolor work.

The contrast between the razor-sharp and crisp yet monochrome characters and the colored yet soft and indistinct background creates a striking, haunting effect that somehow even further accentuates the tenseness of the scene.

The novel is about a party of eight main characters and is divided into eight chapters, each one having a different member of the cast as its focal POV character and first-person narrator. Therefore, each character has one of these portraits to denote the start of "their" chapter.

Presented in order of the chapters, the characters are:
* Keeper James Edward, a cheetah. ("Keeper" is a rank of priest in this novel's setting, sort of the equivalent to our world's "Brother" or "Father.")
* Girard "The Dragon" Drake, a crocodile.
* Marcus Noble, a wolf.
* Dr. Cameron Signey, a collie.
* Celine Coral, a cat, daughter to Jonathan.
* Orrin "Rook" Sebastian, a crow.
* Sir Jonathan Coral, a cat, father to Celine.
* Scott "Scout" Warner, a mouse.

The Afflicted was adapted into the concept album "The Poison Skies" by Ambersun-Tharotia. As each character also has at least one focal POV song in the album, its liner notes do the same thing that the novel did: Each character has one of these portraits next to the lyrics for "their" song.

If we are remembering correctly, these portraits were drawn in inks. The art style is monochromatic with clean and crisp lines, with positively breathtaking hatching techniques used for shading and detail work.

As the illustrator for the novel and album, Sparkyopteryx drew all of these based on our descriptions and references; he wasn't forced to read the entire novel just to familiarize himself with the cast or any silly demands like that. That said, it is genuinely hard for us to believe that he wasn't; words cannot express how perfectly and beautifully each portrait captures not only the mood but the very heart and soul of these characters. To depict them so perfectly *without* being familiar with every single word of the story boggles the mind; you would be forgiven for thinking these are Sparkyopteryx's OCs, not ours, based on how well he seems to know them.

We're finally getting around to checking out FFXIV, I guess? Or at least trying the demo, IDK. Anyway, meet Kat "Cat Face" Fayse, seen here rocking that glorious "I'm level 7 and this is what the random mismatched bullshit the shops and quest rewards had so far I guess" drip. (More in alt text!)

This picture is technically completely safe for work, but you'll never guess the author's fetish or where the majority of time and attention to detail went when messing with all the body replacement mods and model tweaks and such.
