Grad school hammered into me that research was for winners, teaching was for pay, and service was for chumps. That’s completely wrong. The people you teach and serve will remember you for a long time, the people listening to your music will mostly remember you until the next track. #musochat

Nobody, really. Becoming the things I am was never about emulating someone else’s path, but finding the one that was best for me. That being said, my Dean did talk me off a ledge about becoming department chair. Does that count? #musochat

I started off wanting to be an orchestral trumpet player, but realized I hated practicing and loved composing, so I switched to my sophomore year of college. I decided to officially become a theorist when I got into a composition and theory doctorate. I never thought I’d be chair. #musochat

I’ve been a composer since writing the incidental music to Tennessee Williams play “Camino Real“ in my senior year of high school back in the 90s, I’ve been a music theorist since I started teaching in the mid aughts, and I’ve been department chair a little over a year. #musochat
