Still trying every day to learn something from the past, survive the present, and figure out how to make a better future. Also, I like trains.

I don't get to gossip with my sister about the outcome of the Quebec election and that's making me miss her more than usual today.

I only just read @seanyyz.bsky.social's blog post from August about "Why Kingston Needs a New Station" (VIA Rail station, that is). seanmarshall.ca/2026/08/25/w... I agree with most of his argument, and he got the general historical background (going back to the 1850s) right as well. Worth reading!

Why Kingston needs a new VIA station
Kingston’s geography and decisions made by CN are largely to blame for Kingston Station’s isolation, but the future of VIA’s existing rail services demands a better solution. Alto…

Nearly four decades before she published her famous exposé of the Southern plantation system, English actress (& train aficionado) Fanny Kemble visited & wrote about the nation’s first commercial train, the Massachusetts Granite Railway. That & much more in today’s post! 🗃️ @hcrichardson.bsky.social

I don't believe the United States has ever formally apologized for interning Japanese-Americans, has it? Come to think of it, has the United States government ever formally apologized for *any* past wrong it has committed?

The Government of Canada made a formal apology to Japanese-Canadian internees thirty-eight years ago, along with $300 million in compensation. One of Canada's most prominent environmentalists, David Suzuki, was interned with his family during the war. www.cbc.ca/archives/gov...

Yesterday there was a big event called the "Ontario Intercity Travel Summit" at the Ted Rogers School of Management in Toronto, with VIPs from the governments of Ontario and Canada, Air Canada, VIA, Metrolinx, Alto, etc. I have seen zero media coverage of this event. transportfutures.ca/ONintercity/
A kind of overwrought (though possibly not AI-generated) image from the Transport Futures project website—they were the organizer of the Ontario Intercity Travel Summit. The image features a bunch of icons representing different travel modes and considerations (air, rail, busses, trucks, bicycles, parking, fuel, etc.) in circles connected with lines, all overlaid on a background of an elevated expressway passing through a big city with lots of tall buildings and the sun rising or setting behind. Superimposed over everything are the words "advancing mobility pricing, infrastructure and multimodal solutions together." It's a lot, y'all.

If you're going to have a death penalty, it should be done with a bullet to the back of the head, and the judge who delivered the death sentence should be the one who has to pull the trigger.

In a word: intertextuality! To the extent that John Cusack is playing the character of Martin Blank in the movie, he's also playing off the whole range of his earlier roles from the 80s and early 90s, with many, many inside jokes and references. It's a huge nostalgia trip for Gen-Xers.

I think it should be illegal to build new single-family dwellings a short walk from a subway in any city that has one of those. Multi-family or GTFO.

Two things here: first, the Avenues strategy was always a bad idea. Residential intensification should be happening on the side streets, not main thoroughfares. Second, why do you think that listing a property on the city's heritage register leads to any significant impediment to its redevelopment?
