Yesterday there was a big event called the "Ontario Intercity Travel Summit" at the Ted Rogers School of Management in Toronto, with VIPs from the governments of Ontario and Canada, Air Canada, VIA, Metrolinx, Alto, etc. I have seen zero media coverage of this event. transportfutures.ca/ONintercity/
A kind of overwrought (though possibly not AI-generated) image from the Transport Futures project website—they were the organizer of the Ontario Intercity Travel Summit. The image features a bunch of icons representing different travel modes and considerations (air, rail, busses, trucks, bicycles, parking, fuel, etc.) in circles connected with lines, all overlaid on a background of an elevated expressway passing through a big city with lots of tall buildings and the sun rising or setting behind. Superimposed over everything are the words "advancing mobility pricing, infrastructure and multimodal solutions together." It's a lot, y'all.

An excerpt from a Dungeons & Dragons-style alignment chart some guy created over 15 years ago for the movie TOMBSTONE, which came out 33 years ago. At top is a photo of actor Jon Tenney portraying Tombstone, Arizona sheriff John Behan, wearing a bowler hat and pinstripe suit with a sheriff's star on the left breast. He is smiling and holds a cheroot cigar to his mouth with his left hand. Below him is the caption "Lawful Evil" and a quote from Behan in the movie: "besides sheriff, I'm also tax collector, captain the the fire brigade, and chairman of the non-partisan anti-Chinese league. Yessir, I'm a man of many parts."

I had to look up the Toronto Globe from 90 years ago today, and man, what a front page!
The front page of the August 14, 1936 edition of the Toronto Globe newspaper, with the banner headline "Don Prisoners Steal Dope, Hold Orgy." Several other stories on the front page are nearly as wild as that one.

Compare with this map created by Francine Berish and Laura Murray, showing the location of Swamp Ward, which I think most Kingstonians would agree is not part of downtown. There's only a little overlap between their southernmost extent of Swamp Ward and my northernmost extent of downtown.
A map showing the Swamp Ward area of Kingston, Ontario, bounded roughly on the east by the inner harbour, on the south by Queen Street, on the west by Division Street, on the northwest by a diagonal line from Division two blocks south of Stephen toward Belle Island.

My definition vs. nine other people's (so far) definition.
Two maps showing the location of downtown Kingston, Ontario, relative to the borders of the overall municipality. My definition of the boundaries is shown on the left, a fairly small, irregular orange shape. The consensus definition of me and nine other people is shown on the right, same general area, but mapped as a cluster of overlapping orange squares of varying colour density. Two zoomed in versions of the map of Kingston, showing my definition of the boundaries as an irregular blue shape superimposed over the map at left, and the consensus definition as a cluster of yellow and orange squares at right, again, illustrating pretty much the same area of the city.

June 25, 1973. Freiman's famously ran a special Santa Claus excursion train from Ottawa out to the village of Vars and back every Christmas season from 1956 until 1972. Thousands of kids every year got to ride the train, and many of them still remember it fondly.
The first Freiman's department store Santa Claus mystery special train prepares to depart the village of Vars for its return trip to Ottawa via the Canadian National Railway on November 19, 1956. Last weekend I was visiting Lower City Joinery in Hamilton (www.lowercityjoinery.com) and I asked how old their machine tools were. Turns out some of them are over 120 years old!
A view into a high-ceilinged wood shop, with various large machine tools including a drill press and band saw on the left and a large table saw in the centre of the room. Two unfinished canoes hang from the ceiling and various partly completed woodworking projects and bits of sawn lumber line the walls.

Long history of this sort of thing.

I still remember the proposed northern connection that would have joined the top of the Yonge line to the top of the University-Spadina line and made it into a big distorted loop.
A map from the TTC's abandoned Network 2011 plan, showing a then-proposed (later built) extension of the University-Spadina subway to York University and Steeles Ave., a never-built east-west connector along Steeles that would have joined the north ends of the Yonge and University-Spadina lines, the Sheppard Subway (partially built) and the Eglinton West subway (never built, now the western half of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT line).
