🍽️ September is National Mushroom Month! What better way than to celebrate than with a Mushroom Forest Focaccia? As a garden designer, I often bring my botanical interests into the kitchen! #gardenscape #mushrooms
A collection of cooked mushrooms, ready for assembly. From top left, clockwise: brown shimeji, shiitake, king trumpet, maitake (hen of the woods), and lion's mane. The mushrooms have all been baked or sautéed before placing on the focaccia.A closeup of the assembled Mushroom Forest Focaccia, featuring Maitake (hen of the woods), Yellow Oyster Mushrooms, Brown Shimeji, King Tower and Enoki Mushrooms. Sprigs of dill, chives, asparagus spears, and Italian parsley are also tucked into the mix. An overhead view of the assembled Mushroom Forest Focaccia, ready for baking. Fresh out of the oven! Cape Fuchsia (Phygelius) with its tubular blossoms attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. "Phygelius" comes from the Greek word "phyge", meaning flight or avoidance, "in consequence of its having so long escaped the research of botanists" according to W.J. Hooker (1855). Native to South Africa. 🌱🌿

Rhododendron 'Abbey's Re-view' is a prolific spring bloomer... and is supposed to rebloom in the fall, but I've never had that happen. However, it IS spectacular in bloom, also heat and drought tolerant and so recognized by the American Rhododendron Society, Rhododendron of the Year Award 2018.🌱🌿
Rhododendron in full bloom with its lilac-purple flowers completely covering the shrub which is now about 10' tall. A magnificent shrub for full shade gardens because it really stands out in spring. Close-up of the blooms with a little sunlight to highlight the extraordinarily vibrant, lilac tones. The rhododendron is so completely covered with lilac-colored blooms in spring, you can hardly see any foliage.

Indigofera suffruticosa 🌱🌿 was popular as a highly prized source of blue dye in the 17th and 18th centuries where it still grows wild on the north end of Georgia’s Ossabaw Island at North End Plantation, the site of a colonial-era indigo plantation. History in AltText.
A detail from the 1780 map of South Carolina by William DeBrahm depicting enslaved men agitating the liquid (background) and cutting the dried dyestuff into squares (foreground).

In the year 1775, South Carolina exported more than one million pounds of dried indigo cakes to England. That record-high output was immediately followed by a near collapse of the industry. The commencement of the American Revolution, which followed years of simmering political tensions, permanently dismantled the traditional mercantile links between American farmers and British customers. Some South Carolina planters continued to grow indigo and to produce the dye during the eight-year war, but they had a difficult time finding customers for the product.
