Are you talking about Hegseth’s speech? Paxton doesn’t use the slur, at least not in this clip. But your point is 100% spot on.

Why do you need an AI wearable to know when your toddler is having a tantrum? Those tend to impinge on your consciousness, don’t they? Even if you’re trying to close a big tech sale?

This is the thing. Why do these guys care so much about whether and why someone is a fan of women’s sports? The endpoint of yammering endlessly about women athletes compared to men is the covert contention that women’s sports shouldn’t exist.

Sorry, in what world would there be a financial incentive for Scottie Scheffler to play in the LPGA? PGA purses are ten times as much. You’re just uncomfortable with how comfortable people are with the circumstances in the actual case at hand, so you concoct an absurd scenario instead.

It seems to me that these types of Dems don’t mind DSA *policies* as much as they mind that they *call* themselves socialists. Worried that Republicans will be mean to liberals, same as always.

I don’t accept the argument that, if a person is dangling from a skyscraper by holding onto a rope, and you cut that rope, you’re responsible for killing that person.

I think I’m largely agreeing with your findings and recommendations. I’m coming at this topic as an editor who spends his days trying to convince writers not to be deliberately confusing, so that colors my view, I’m sure.

They think they’re being responsible or careful, but people often are geared to think plain speech equals truth. So when you have one guy yelling “2020 was RIGGED!” and his opponent talking in circles, with endless qualifications, bad outcomes follow.

I want to be clear that I’m not criticizing your work, or the thoughtful case for nuance. My point is that far too many people with power to oppose these lies retreat into a kind of legalese or bureaucratic language that people don’t understand or (in particular) trust.

That's a fair point. Could also be stated as "Only eligible voters are voting" or "No one is voting illegally." I agree with OP that the message needs to be more direct. My concern is that too much nuance can make statements sound like prevarication through hair-splitting to non-political people.

Neat trick: rig the electoral maps until there’s like one large majority-black district per state, and then mutter in sinister tones about how that district isn’t “representative” of the rest of the state.

Great new stat from @senatebudget.bsky.social: of the $140 billion that Trump & Republicans gave ICE & CBP in the Big Beautiful Bill, $103 billion is still unobligated as of the end of March. Now they’re asking for another $70 billion even though about 75% of the OBBBA money still remains unused.
