It never ceases to amaze me that the sort of men who claim women are too impulsive and emotional to be leaders are the same ones who swear sober men become completely incapacitated in reason and empathy in the presence of a drunk woman.

There’s a new article making the rounds about ERO ONE. And while I’m glad the program is beginning to get attention, this piece materially misses the point of what ERO ONE is, and centers activists as the victims instead of vulnerable migrants and their communities.

The mortality reviews that ICE published late last week show that medical neglect is widespread in Trump's concentration camps — something immigrants, advocates and attorneys have said for years, and which ICE routinely denies. New from me in @prospect.org.

The federal government released dozens of mortality reviews of immigrants who died in detention in recent years. They show a uniform pattern of medical neglect.

It appears to have a telescoping arm.
Screenshot of contracting statement which says: "The SPOT robot will be configured with dual output light sources so it can operate in all
lighting conditions as well as supporting Special Response Teams (SRT) in low/no light
environments where Night Optical Devices (NODs) are being employed. The SPOT’s audio
intake can hear motion interior, and the operator can alert the team to the presence of a
subject. SPOT can also extend its arm (full extension height is 5 ½ feet) to see on top of
closets, bunk beds, and some crawl spaces."

ICE says only RADeCO could supply its robot dogs. But the arm, camera and radios on ICE's list match what Boston Dynamics sells in its own public safety kit. RADeCO's one unique product, its detection software, is listed as optional.

As contract nerds, this is wild. ICE posted a market research notice on Aug. 28, and two companies responded. ICE ruled out one offering a standard Boston Dynamics Spot, never opened the order to bidding, and gave RADeCO a sole-source award on Sept. 25.
Screenshot of section 4 of an ICE document justifying a purchase without full and open competition. The section cites 41 U.S.C. 3304 as the legal authority and lists seven possible reasons for limiting competition, each with a checkbox. Only the first box is checked: "RFO 6.103-1: Only one responsible source and no other supplies or services will satisfy agency requirements." The unchecked options are unusual and compelling urgency; industrial mobilization, engineering, development or research capability, or expert services; international agreement; authorized or required by statute; national security; and public interest.Screenshot of section 9 of the same ICE document, titled "Description of Market Research." The text reads: "Market research was conducted to identify contractors capable of providing a custom Quadruped Unmanned Ground Vehicle able to fulfil the tactical needs of the agency. The research included internet searches and a review of available vendor information, pricing data, and quotes. The market research SSN identified one vendor (RADeCO) capable of providing the customized CERBERUS SPOT-AV. GovTRobotics submission of the Boston Dynamics Spot Enterprise with Spot Arm was evaluated against the required Description of Specifications for the Quadruped Unmanned Ground Vehicle and deemed not technically acceptable. Furthermore, GovTRobotics is not an authorized reseller of Boston Dynamics supplies. Following a thorough review, it was determined that only RADeCO customized CERBERUS SPOT-AV solution could meet all the essential requirements outlined in the SSN."

De-escalation.
Screenshot of three paragraphs from a news article, with one sentence highlighted in orange. The text reads: "According to the document, the robots will support ICE's Special Response Teams, including in dark settings where officers use night vision equipment. It says the robot's microphone can pick up movement so the operator can alert the team 'to the presence of a subject.' The robot's arm can reach 5½ feet to see on top of closets, bunk beds and some crawl spaces, the document says. The package also includes a two-way communication system that the document describes as being for de-escalation. The document ties the purchase to the Subterranean Border Defense Act, a law on efforts against cross-border smuggling tunnels, and to President Donald Trump's executive order titled 'Protecting the American People Against Invasion.'" The highlighted sentence is the one about the two-way communication system for de-escalation.

My column from Monday. The emerging consensus to drop Alabama’s grocery tax (yes, non-Alabamians, we tax food) is a reminder that Alabama is only a low-tax state if you own a forest or reside in the top federal income tax bracket, and that we need top-to-bottom tax reform.
