Great work! Did you know, two-thirds of all freshwater species can be supported by ponds? And as a habitat, they're also natural defenses against climate extremes, from fire breaks to mitigating flooding 🐸 🪲 🦎 🦗 🐌 🐸 ➡️ More on the importance of ponds: freshwaterhabitats.org.uk/habitats/pon...

We have criticised all forms of misinformation regarding the #DRS, none of which reflect any international evidence we've seen. We urge Welsh Government to press ahead with the DRS plans already in place and stop further delays to the implementation of this key policy. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 🧵4/4

Deposit Return Schemes are a form of Extended Producer Responsibility #EPR - a policy principle that holds producers responsible for their materials on the market. The expectation of this principle is that costs are absorbed by producers. 🧵2/4

We want to give a huge thank you to all the Species Champion MSs who have worked with us over the last 5 years. Check out some highlights here: waleslink.org/wp-content/u... We also had to give a special shout out to Mark Isherwood, @carolynthomasclwyd.bsky.social & @juliemorganlab.bsky.social 🪺🌼🍄
This is a screen capture of the first page of the ‘thank you’ newsletter – the copy is in a column on the left (text below) and the right is three photos of species which were part of the project. The top is a common toad, half submerged in a pond, peering into the distance with half closed eyes. The second is a hedgehog, looking into what seems like a puddle, as though about to take a drink. And the last one is a harbour porpoise, a grey marine mammal with a white belly, tail in the water and head smiling out of the surface.

Text is as follows:
Diolch yn fawr to all our Species Champions of the Sixth Senedd
From 2021 to 2026, we recruited 43 Senedd Members to advocate on behalf of an at-risk species that can be found in their constituency.

We were overwhelmed by MSs’ enthusiasm for taking up the cause for nature and speaking for species that cannot speak for themselves. We couldn’t keep up with as regular visits and briefings as we would’ve liked to, and were especially impressed with Champions who went above and beyond and acted on their own volition to find out more and work with organisations on the cause. With the help of our excellent Champions’ scrutiny, the Sixth Senedd term saw some landmark developments to restore nature, including:
• The Environment (Principles, Governance and Biodiversity Targets) Bill 2026, which sets the process for creating nature targets for Wales, in line with our international commitments.
• The Biodiversity Deep Dive and the subsequent establishment of Naturfa sites by the Welsh Government helped set the pathway to protecting 30% of our land, rivers and sea by 2030.
• The Agriculture Act 2023 established the framework for the Sustainable Farming Scheme, which formally started in January 2026, to help farmers transition to more sustainable farming methods to tackle carbon, nature loss and create more climate-resilient practices for all farm business.

This is a screen capture of the second page, featuring Mark Isherwood, outgoing Senedd Member for North Wales. There are multiple images of him at events, on site visits, and social media posts, highlighting actions to restore curlew across Wales.

The text is as follows:
Champion of the Term!
All our champions have done brilliant work, but we have to give a special shout out to Mark Isherwood, who has never missed an opportunity to raise the plight of the curlew, whose numbers have dropped by 80% since 1990. Sponsored by RSPB Cymru, he’s repeatedly marked World Curlew Day in Plenary; worked with the Gylfinir Cymru / Curlew Wales partnership on their restoration; sponsored the launch of the Wales Curlew Recovery Plan; met with fellow Curlew Champions from Scotland and England at a Curlew Summit at 10 Downing Street; looked into local planning applications with concerns on the potential impact on curlew, and met with WEL members every time he could when we came to the Senedd. Thank you Mark!

Andrew RT Davies makes an important point; unsustainable farming approaches are making it really difficult for some farmers to make a profit. But it's not as simple as just providing more subsidy, but subsidising changes to a more resilient form of farming. www.conservatives.wales/news/welsh-c...

This is a graphic for a longer quoted comment from Karen Whitfield, Director of WEL. The photo alongside it is of the River Ely, winding through light green hills, surrounded by trees and hedge lines in the distance. The quote says:

"Wales Environment Link welcomes the launch of the Welsh Government’s Green Paper on water system reform today, with its ambition and intent to develop a more holistic water system that works for Wales.

We desperately need more investment in our water system, covering all sectors that impact upon water quality and availability. It won’t be easy to fund, but we’re glad to see commitments towards more investment in monitoring and enforcement, as well as modernising regulation.

The timeline for the new regulatory system to be in place is long, but we are heartened to hear from the Deputy First Minister that we don’t need to wait to get started on this transition – there are already opportunities to drive improvements through existing processes and regulation. Let’s get on and deliver the change we need to see.”
