@harpaa01 Yes, and maybe in the end this is more about my own reaction as well - I reacted strongly to the story at first, and only then started thinking about it afterwards.

I don't know which level this is I'm on now, but, I'm feeling a bit iffy about this story making the rounds of Marissa Mayer using AI to describe her child. Because, yeah, sure, it's ridiculous AI psychosis bullshit and sociopath behaviour. But is it any worse than the million examples we have […]

This book also predicted cryptocurrencies, which isn't that surprising because there were already people trying to figure out how to create them at the time, even though nobody had quite succeeded yet, but it was also pretty good at predicting the consequences of cryptocurrencies.

What I like most about it, I think, is that it asks the question, "When did humanity lose control of its destiny", in a world where it most definitely has, and then lets its different characters give different opinions, with some saying it happened in the real past, and some in the fictional […]

Look, this was written in 1994, and it refers to the "First Gulf War", nine years before the second one happened. Not the most difficult of predictions to get right, granted, but it sets a tone.

This is a book that by all measures should be fairly unremarkable, but, for some reason, in writing this Bruce Sterling makes prediction after prediction that ends up weirdly prescient. I know, of course, that sci-fi is never about predicting the future, just exaggerating the present, and that […]

So. There's a piece of writing that has stuck with me for all of the thirty years since I first read it, in Bruce Sterling's _Heavy Weather_. It is a book about storm chasers in a future ravaged by global warming and collapse, and towards the end, there is a […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
April Logan stood up. “Forgive me for interrupting your
deliberations, but if it’s all right with the group, I’d like to ask all of
you something.”
April Logan looked at Jerry. Jerry lifted his brows.
“Actually, it’s something of a poll query.”
“Go ahead, just ask,” Jane hissed at her.
“My question is: When do you think the human race conclusively
lost control over its own destiny? I’d like everyone here to answer, if
you don’t mind.” April produced a handheld notepad. “Please just
start anywhere in the circle—here at my left, will do.”Ed Dunnebecke stood up. “Funny thing, but I think the French
Revolution had a very good chance and blew it. Europe wasted the
next two centuries trying to do what the Revolution had right in its
grasp in 1789. But once you stumble into that public-execution
nonsense … Hell, that was when I knew the Regime had lost it
during the State of Emergency, when they started cablecasting their
goddamn executions. Give ’em to Madame Guillotine, and the
Revolution will eat its young, just as sure as hell.… Yeah, put me
down for 1789. I’ve said enough.”

Coding agents reduce software development to a simple matter of: * specifying requirements * verifying correctness and quality * maintaining and operating software you didn't write As we all know, those have always been the easiest, most well-understood parts of the craft, so everything is fine!

Uuuugh. Migrated my server off DigitalOcean to OVH. Let me know if you notice anything breaking, but, I don't really use the server for a lot of things anyway so probably won't be too disruptive. Why does tech have to be like this.

So it turns out the correct way to think of it is: Game states and moves can be thought of as nodes and edges in a directed graph. However, what is interesting is not individual states, but strongly connected components of this graph. Each strongly connected component represents a set of states […]

The actual problem being solved being: Is a solitaire-like game lost? This turns out to be a pretty throny problem to solve. It's easy to see when there are no more moves available to make, but the tricky part is that you might have moves you can still make but they do not progress the game. And […]

The expected nature of the graph is such that if the graph is complex, a counter-example should be easy to find, and if there is no counter-example, the graph should be fairly simple.

I need an algorithm. Given: a dynamically generated graph (you have to visit a node to calculate the list of its neighbours, at a cost), and a starting node, I want to find out: * Whether every node can reach this starting node. * With an early exit as soon as a counter-example is found […]
