Getting just a little bit fucking tired of the Youtube algorithm regularly going "Oh, you watched two videos from this channel? Would you like to: WATCH NOTHING BUT THAT CHANNEL FOREVER NOW?" and making literally 75% of the front page be ONE SINGLE CHANNEL. Who thought this was a good feature […]

So. There's a piece of writing that has stuck with me for all of the thirty years since I first read it, in Bruce Sterling's _Heavy Weather_. It is a book about storm chasers in a future ravaged by global warming and collapse, and towards the end, there is a […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

April Logan stood up. “Forgive me for interrupting your
deliberations, but if it’s all right with the group, I’d like to ask all of
you something.”
April Logan looked at Jerry. Jerry lifted his brows.
“Actually, it’s something of a poll query.”
“Go ahead, just ask,” Jane hissed at her.
“My question is: When do you think the human race conclusively
lost control over its own destiny? I’d like everyone here to answer, if
you don’t mind.” April produced a handheld notepad. “Please just
start anywhere in the circle—here at my left, will do.”

Ed Dunnebecke stood up. “Funny thing, but I think the French
Revolution had a very good chance and blew it. Europe wasted the
next two centuries trying to do what the Revolution had right in its
grasp in 1789. But once you stumble into that public-execution
nonsense … Hell, that was when I knew the Regime had lost it
during the State of Emergency, when they started cablecasting their
goddamn executions. Give ’em to Madame Guillotine, and the
Revolution will eat its young, just as sure as hell.… Yeah, put me
down for 1789. I’ve said enough.”

Coding agents reduce software development to a simple matter of: * specifying requirements * verifying correctness and quality * maintaining and operating software you didn't write As we all know, those have always been the easiest, most well-understood parts of the craft, so everything is fine!

Ok, so, we all know skyfish, right? They are famous cryptids that are particularly popular in Japanese occult circles, and are more commonly known as "rods" in English. According to the OFFICIAL history, they were first discovered in Roswell, New Mexico in […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

Uuuugh. Migrated my server off DigitalOcean to OVH. Let me know if you notice anything breaking, but, I don't really use the server for a lot of things anyway so probably won't be too disruptive. Why does tech have to be like this.

I need an algorithm. Given: a dynamically generated graph (you have to visit a node to calculate the list of its neighbours, at a cost), and a starting node, I want to find out: * Whether every node can reach this starting node. * With an early exit as soon as a counter-example is found […]

Wow, the new Ghost in the Shell sure is... a thing. It's an insanely direct adaptation of the original manga, for good and bad. It's just as dense and hard to follow, it's insanely intense and imaginative in its action scenes, it's got Shirow's weird rightwing nonsense, and it's wacky and […]

It sure is tempting to read Witch Hat Atelier as a direct response to Harry Potter, setting out to do right everything it does wrong. Not sure that is a fair, though, since the problems of Harry Potter are really just problems that pervade a lot of fantasy storytelling. Harry Potter is just a […]

It's just WEIRD at this point that "cyberpunk" is still a thing that is popular. In 2026. Neuromancer came out in 1984. Modern cyberpunk is basically indistinguishable from what Gibson lay down in that book. That's 42 years ago. 42 years before Neuromancer came out, we were in the middle of […]
