I goddamn love the intensifying relationship between Evelyn and Danny, and Finn really coming into his own as Team Dad just... wow, I really think Byron understands how to write prickly, but ultimately, good-hearted, caring people. The protagonists feel like people I've known before. Flaws and all.

Overall, these are minor issues, but definitely, ones I felt affected my fun with the sequel. Still, it's an easy recommend! The middle of a trilogy is often the darkest and heaviest of the 3 but often includes the biggest examples of heroism and strength from the protags. This is no exception!

That darkness was very appreciated, even if the levity was missed. Also, the last handful of chapters have at least 1 serious typo each. I know, I know, I'm being that guy, but it happened once in book 1 and like 3-5 times in 2. It feels like 2 wasn't as closely proofread. Kind of a shame, IMO.

IE: The chair jousting scene and the wedding are stand-out moments of this, and I REALLY felt the lessening of Evelyn's snarky/funny internal dialogue. She was much more serious and negatively affected in this one. Which, to be fair, she SHOULD be. It's appropriate to the darker tone of Book 2.

One other neutral note was just how much more BLEAK the story became. I'm of mixed feelings about that. On the positive: it was EFFECTIVELY written. I felt the dread and tension, big time, and I was absolutely reveling in that. Downside: I did kind of miss the moments of fun and joy from Book 1!

If, at some point, the stakes become that the world ends if the protagonist fails... well, then you know almost for certain that they won't. ALB Book 2 suffers from the latter in the second half, IMO. I respect the desire to escalate, but it got so dire that I stopped believing they could fail.

If there's anything that tends to kill my investment in stories, it's when the threat gets so big that failure becomes impossible. If, in fiction, the stakes are personal suffering/individual death: that matters a TON to me because failure is often very much on the table! A protagonist can die!

Minor criticism: I didn't love the ending as much. The final paragraph just kind of ends abruptly and didn't really emotionally bookend the story, IMO. I really liked the way the wording of the final blog post of part one mirrored the language of the 1st, and the tone just felt lighter to me.
