Wacswain gets political! US VP says the antichrist is among us. Only one obvious candidate! Seriously why do so many people believe this fiction? It offends me as a scientist.

Important to defend this. The problems of climate change won’t go away because we don’t measure them but they’ll certainly be harder to solve. @royalsociety.org

royalsociety.org/current-topi... If you have (UK) Conservative friends please get them to read this. If we drill oil that would otherwise stay in the ground we simply delay net zero and raise the temperature at which it’s achieved. (And it doesn’t affect the price we pay for energy.)

I doubt there is a “cause” for autism, but if I wanted to test for possible contributory factors, I wouldn’t ask an economist or a lawyer. I’d ask a medical scientist who could tell me what the scientific literature tells us. All of it: not just the bit that gives the answer I want to hear.

Antarctic ice shelf kept its cool during the last interglacial period
An ice core suggests that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet lost ice 125,000 years ago, but not to the extent proposed by some scenarios.

Eric Wolff @wacswain.bsky.social · 29/01/2025
5. The fact that a significant part of WAIS was lost anyway still says we should avoid the climate that caused it. That requires us to reach net zero sooner rather than later.
020
Eric Wolff @wacswain.bsky.social · 29/01/2025
4. Lessons for the future? This suggests we should expect significant ice loss from WAIS over the next decades to centuries, but makes the very worst case scenarios look slightly less realistic.
010
Eric Wolff @wacswain.bsky.social · 29/01/2025
3. We find: a. The Ronne Ice Shelf survived b. But the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) certainly retreated . So it's good news and bad. The ice sheet retreated but didn't do the worst case that some models proposed. WAIS retreat was probably mainly in the Amundsen sector, not the Weddell.

Eric Wolff @wacswain.bsky.social · 29/01/2025
2. Our article uses the Skytrain Ice Rise ice core to show what happened around the West Antarctic Ice sheet (WAIS) in the last interglacial, 125000 years ago. This is a time when Antarctic temperature was similar to what we expect in the next few decades. What we found follows in number 3.

Sea salt data from an ice core record show that Antarctica’s Ronne Ice Shelf survived the last interglacial, the last period of enhanced and sustained global warmth about 125,000 years ago.
